METRO ROUNDUP: The Woods hires Steve Beeler as volleyball coach

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College athletic director Deanna Bradley has selected Steve Beeler as the Pomeroys’ new volleyball coach, according to an announcement Friday.

Beeler will serve as SMWC’s head volleyball coach for the first scholarship program in school history. The last volleyball program there was during the fall of 1991 and did not involve scholarship athletes. With the expected completion of the new sports and recreation facility, the college added volleyball as its eighth sport.

Beeler comes to SMWC as the co-founder and director of the Crossroads Volleyball Club (COA) in Terre Haute. He has been involved with the club as a coach and recruiter over the past 16 years.

Beeler also has been involved with the volleyball program at Terre Haute South High School, where he currently teaches physics. He served as the junior varsity coach and varsity assistant coach from 1997 to 2004. Then for six seasons (2004-2009), he served as the Braves’ varsity volleyball coach.

Beeler has been coaching youth volleyball since 1999, but brings plenty of experience in his first time coaching at the college level.

“I am excited to be the first volleyball coach of a scholarship based program at SMWC,” Beeler noted. “It is such a great opportunity to build a quality program from the ground up.”

The program will compete collegiately in the fall of 2015, which will give Beeler time to recruit and find new talent for a new program.

“It will be a long process of finding the type of player that has the athletic ability, patience, work ethic and volleyball IQ to compete at the college level,” he said. “I expect to spend a lot of time talking to potential recruits this spring and hope to bring in a couple of players next fall that are willing to sit out a year in exchange for being the first scholarship volleyball players in school history.”

Bradley believes Beeler is the right person for the job and will bring success to a new sports program at the college.

“We are thrilled to welcome coach Beeler to The Woods,” she said. “Steve has solid experience in program development and an extensive pipeline for recruitment opportunities. It is exciting to have someone with his background and experience to begin the recruiting responsibilities for the startup of our first scholarship volleyball program here at SMWC.”

Postponements, rescheduling

New announcements — Northview High School’s home boys-girls basketball doubleheader today against Brown County has been postponed. No make-up date has been announced yet.

Also, the North Vermillion at Riverton Parke girls basketball game that was postponed from Thursday will be played Feb. 1, with the junior varsity contest starting at 11 a.m.

The Terre Haute Rex rank second among the 12 Prospect League baseball teams in extra-base hits and Zach Welz, Kaden Moore and Tony Rosselli added to the Rex 2014 haul at Bob Warn Field in a 3-1 win over Springfield on Thursday.
Kaden Moore put up the Rex’s first run with a line-drive home run over the left-field wall in the second inning. Welz added his homer in the seventh — with a no-doubt blast to left to add an insurance run.
