AVON — Terre Haute South ran into a championship performance Wednesday night in Game 2 of the Class 4A Avon Sectional for boys high school basketball.

Martinsville’s Troy Spears scored 30 points while leading the Artesians to a 65-44 victory that ended South’s season.

Spears, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, hit 10 of 18 shots from the floor and was 10 of 10 from the free-throw line and also had four steals.

“[Spears] can do everything. He’s hard to guard. He was the best player on the floor tonight. He made a lot of shots. He made tough shots. He played his butt off on defense. He rebounded well. He’s a complete player,” South coach Scott Ridge said.

South was led by Jaylen Minnett with nine points and Tim Herrin with seven.

South finished its season 8-15 but will return all five starters from the sectional and lose only two seniors, Da’Shon Heyen and Jerad Fuson.

“They’re great kids. They just need to learn to make better decisions and play better. [Heyen and Fuson] came up through the JV together and made the varsity together,” Ridge said.

Martinsville, the defending sectional champion, led from start to finish, despite some good moments of defense by South.

The Artesians were up by five until South’s Josiah Wallace hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the first period.

From the start, South wanted to get the ball inside to Herrin, but a nagging back injury and Martinsville’s 6-4 Aaron Tincher and 6-7 Keegan Northern made that more than difficult.

Herrin converted on a three-point play and Conner Shipley hit a free throw to bring the Braves within 15-12 at 6:16 in the second quarter. But the Braves didn’t score again for the next five minutes and the Artesians went on a 12-0 run to lead 27-12.

Jaylen Minnett hit a 3 to break South’s drought, but Martinsville led 30-15 at halftime.

With Martinsville pulling out to a 38-20 lead three minutes into the second half, South’s Ridge went to an offense-defense substitution. When the Braves were on offense, Wallace, Jaylen Minnett and Chase Mahurin entered the game. When South was on defense, LaMarkis Stevenson and Shipley played.

“We had to try something. We couldn’t sit there and keep it a slow, half-court game. When they had the ball some, we were putting in our fast guys for the press and when we had the ball, we were putting in our best shooters to space the floor. It’s tournament time, you got to put everything on the line,” Ridge said.

South’s Minnett, Wallace and Mahurin combined for four 3s in the third quarter, but Martinsville still led 50-36 going into the fourth quarter.

And in the fourth quarter, South couldn’t gain ground sending Martinsville to the free-throw line. The Artesians hit 9 of 10 free throws in the final eight minutes.

“They’re just a great team. They outplayed us in every facet tonight,” Ridge said.
