Prep basketball: North girls finish another week with a 3-0 record

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North concluded its second 3-0 week in girls high school basketball Saturday, defeating Carmel 51-41 in the North gymnasium.

The Patriots, who improved to 6-0 and are 1-0 in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference, will entertain undefeated Bloomington South on Tuesday.

North trailed the Greyhounds after one period 15-12 and the teams were tied at 26-all at intermission.

The Patriots outscored Carmel 12-9 in the third canto to take at 38-35 lead into the final frame and outscored the Greyhounds 9-2 in the final six minutes to hand the visitors their first setback.

Adrienne Pritchard again led the Patriots in scoring with 14 points and had another double-double with 10 rebounds. She had seven of her points in the final period.

Layne Curley had eight points, 13 rebounds and three steals for North, while Sierra Sykes had 11 points and five rebounds.

North shot 40 percent from the field (18 of 45) and Carmel was good on just 24 percent (13 of 54). Both teams had four 3-pointers in the early-afternoon contest and both teams connected on 11 free throws.

Led by Curley and Pritchard, North had a 39-37 edge on the boards with Abby Howes pullling down six for the Patriots. Kennedy Kantner led Carmel with 10 points. Emily Kmec and Andi Kwasniewski each had six boards and Kantner pulled down five.

“This game was a great team victory for us. Defensively, we did what we wanted to do, trying to eliminate the 3-point shot — one of Carmel’s strengths — and we did not get outhustled. Loose ball, we went after them. We outscrapped them. We got on the boards pretty well,” said North coach Mike Allen.

“I told the girls there are very few teams that can say they are 6-0 to start their season. It’s something to relish and enjoy … but Monday we have get back after it. We have a very tough and physical Bloomington South team that will come down here, wanting to dismantle us. We’ll just have to play a little tougher and little smarter and see what happens,” he said.
