Casey football suffers first loss in Class 1A semifinals

DOWNS, Ill. — Downs Tri-Valley earned a spot in the semifinals of the Illinois Class 1A high school football playoffs Saturday, defeating Casey-Westfield 48-27 in a battle of 11-0 teams.

The 12-0 Vikings will play either Maroa-Forsyth or Camp Point Central next Saturday, with the winner advancing to the state finals at DeKalb, Ill.

Casey concluded another 11-1 season, losing for only the 13th time in 10 years after winning 114 games.

The host team set the tempo on its first two possessions, needing six plays to score twice and take a 14-0 lead.

Tri-Valley took advantage of a short Casey punt into the strong wind and a penalty for good field position at the Warriors' 29-yard line and Braden Herrman scored on the Vikings' first offensive play.

Tri-Valley took advantage of a Casey turnover to score again, taking possession at its own 39. Caleb Wilson capped the 61-yard drive with a 2-yard run.

The Warriors got their first touchdown early in the second stanza, taking advantage of a Tri-Valley turnover. Ethan Lucas got the TD on a 10-yard run and kicked the extra points for a 14-7 game but the Vikings got two more touchdowns in the period and held a 28-7 lead at intermission.

Tri-Valley got the only score in the third quarter, but the teams combined for five touchdowns in the final frame.

Casey scored first with Lucas and Nicco Stepina hooking up on a 21-yard pass play and it was 35-13 after the Warriors’ two-point conversion try was not good.

The Vikings needed only one play again to score with Wilson getting the six points on a 66-yard run and the Vikings were up 42-13.

The Warriors responded quickly with Stepina getting their third touchdown on a 66-yard run. Casey then recovered an onside kick and scored when Zack Murphy took Stepina’s pass and zig-zagged his way 36 yards to score. Tri-Valley's lead was cut to 42-27, but the Vikings got the final score of the afternoon when they drove 65 yards and scored on a recovered fumble in the end zone with Herrman apparently being the player to get on the football.

Herrman finished with three touchdowns and rushed for 204 yards in the first half. Wilson also scored three times for the winners.
