Prep roundup: Miners, Cardinals to play for GCI title

SWITZ CITY — Linton and Bloomfield will meet in the championship game of the Greene County Invitational for high school boys basketball teams tonight at White River Valley.

Linton defeated Eastern Greene 64-42 and Bloomfield bested Clay City 26-21 on Monday to gain the title tilt. They will meet for the championship after the third-place game between Eastern Greene and Clay City that tips off at 6 p.m.

Turnovers and fouls marked the first game won by Linton as coach Joey Hart got his 200th coaching victory.

The Miners used an 11-2 run early to take a 12-6 lead after one period and ran off 17 straight points in the second period to assume a 31-13 lead at halftime.

Linton took a 47-27 lead into the fourth frame and outscored the Thunderbirds in the last quarter.

Five players fouled out of the contest — four by Eastern Greene including Briar Martindale, the Thunderbirds’ leading scorer on Saturday, in the third quarter.

Bryant Jackson led the Miners with 20 points. Cam Creager and Cam Sego led Eastern Greene with 11 points.

In the nightcap, Bloomfield avenged an earlier defeat.

Trevor Singer hit two 3-pointers to spark the Eels at the start of the second stanza and they had a 13-8 advantage at halftime.

Bloomfield outscored the Eels 18-8 in the second half, taking its first lead at 17-16 to close the third quarter.

The Cardinals had their biggest lead at 21-16 but Clay City gained a 21-21 tie before Chris Gilmore hit a basket to put the Cardinals up 23-21. They hit free throws down the stretch for the final margin.

Singer had 11 points for the Eels while Kyle Robinson had eight for Bloomfield.
