Wabash Valley Classic: South Vermillion tops Riverton Parke for first victory

TERRE HAUTE — South Vermillion opened the 14th annual Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic boys high school basketball tournament with its first win of the season, holding off Riverton Parke 43-40 at Terre Haute North High School.

South Vermillion led 13-11 after one quarter and 23-19 at halftime.

With the score tied 29-29 in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter, South Vermillion’s Nathan Luft and Tristan Spivey hit back-to-back 3-point shots to put the Wildcats in front for good at 35-29.

The Panthers closed to within three, 42-39, with 1:42 to play on two free throws by Luther Mathas.

Jordan Branz hit 6-of-7 free throws to lead South Vermillion’s scoring with 12 points.

Riverton Parke got nine points from Tanner Edge and eight each from Kole Sanders and Hunter Falls.

In other Pizza Hut Classic first-round games Thursday:

• Casey 71, Monrovia 38 — The Warriors from Illinois set the tempo early in the fifth game of the tournament to set up a matchup with Terre Haute South today.

They scored the first eight points of the contest and had a 21-5 lead at the first stop. They led 36-19 at the intermission and took a 59-28 lead into the final period.

Casey connected on 27 of 50 shots including 7 of 13 3-pointers for 54 percent and had a 29-14 edge on the boards. The Warriors were 9 of 12 in the third canto including four 3-pointers and the Warriors had just one turnover in the first quarter and 13 for the game.

Senior Sam Huisinga led the 5-1 Warriors with 21 points, missing just one shot, while Trey Thompson tallied 16 points and Brandon Wolfe had 10.

Thompson hit his first five shots Zach Murphy had seven points, six boards and three steals.

Austin Baker had 14 points for the 0-6 Bulldogs, making 4 of 6 3-pointers.

  • Farris, Amies win Brazil Open titles

    Troy Farris and George Amies were two winners in the Brazil Open concluded Sunday at Forest Park.
    Farris claimed his 10th title in the event with rounds of 65 and 68 for 9-under-par 133. He went 30-35 in Sunday’s round and had an eagle and nine birdies in the two days.

    Phegley is a third-time All-Star in the International League, while Marshall, Ill., native Derek Eitel was named to his first Triple-A All-Star game. The Rose-Hulman graduate and right-handed relief pitcher for the Reno Aces has put up impressive numbers in the Pacific Coast League. Eitel has a 2.70 earned-run average with 60 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks’ top minor-league team.
