Terre Haute’s Paulin inducted into National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame

By Dennis Clark
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Cliff Paulin of Terre Haute was inducted into the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in the “Legendary Communicator” category at a surprise recognition dinner Thursday at Sam’s Steakhouse.

Paulin learned of his Hall of Fame induction before a large group of family and friends. Presenters were fellow Terre Haute residents Elmer Guerri and Jack Kerins. Guerri is a member of the Hall of Fame’s Advisory Governors Board, while Kerins was a previous “Legendary Communicator” inductee in 2002.

“I was shocked … totally surprised,” Paulin reacted to winning the award shortly afterwards. “I never expected this [award]. I knew all about the [Fresh Water] Fishing Hall of Fame. Been there before. But its been years before. I’ll go back now, I’m sure.”

Paulin is best known for developing the Indiana State University Bass Fishing Institute (1973-85), which has become a model for other national organizations to deliver fresh water fishing educational programs, television and video education formats nationwide.

He has personally helped to develop basic presentation and speaking skills of some of the most well-known names in sport fishing. Several letters of recognition were presented to Paulin, including one from Jerry McKinnis, famous for his television show “The Fishin’ Hole”.

Other accomplishments for Paulin were organizing many regional and local fishing groups and clubs. Those include Hoosier Big Country — designed to educate and expose youngsters to hunting, fishing and camping — and the Lunker Shed — a social center for anglers to share experiences and learn skills to become more successful.

The National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum is located in Hayward, Wis. For more information about the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, visit www.freshwater-fishing.org
