ISU women light up Detroit 74-60

Tribune-Star staff report

Detroit Indiana State put four scorers in double figures and held host Detroit scoreless for a pair of long stretches that totaled nearly 14 minutes en route to earning a 74-60 victory in women’s college basketball Tuesday night.

ISU earned its first victory of the season to move to 1-2 while Detroit fell to 1-3. The Titans were coming off a win over No. 23-ranked Georgia four days earlier.

“It’s nice to get the first win of the season,” coach Jim Wiedie said. “I was a little disappointed in the energy level at certain points, and there were numerous opportunities to put [the Titans] away in the second half, but we just couldn’t quite get over that hump. The areas that we struggled in are areas that we can control, such as energy level. We are just real happy to get out of her with a win.”

The Sycamores built a lead in the first half with an impressive 18-0 run which covered over eight and a half minutes. Detroit took a 14-8 lead on a 3-point field goal by Chanica Hall with 13:51 on the clock and didn’t score another point until Shandi Brown hit a pair of free throws with 3:05 on the clock before intermission.

Indiana State led by as many as 14 in the first half as a layup by Kelsie Cooley topped the 18-point spurt with 3:46 left before halftime. A 3-point basket by Detroit with less than a minute left got the Titans back to within seven points at the half, 35-28.

The defense was able to get it cranked up again in the second half by forcing another Detroit dry spell; Brigid Mulroy hit a 3-pointer at 15:55 and the Titans did not score again until the 10:30 mark when Mulroy connected on her second of three second-half 3-pointers. By the time Mulroy hit that triple, the Sycamores held a 51-38 advantage.

Indiana State was paced by Kelsey Luna with 18 points. Leah Phillips poured in 15 points of her own.

Both Luna and Phillips, with three 3-pointers each on Tuesday, now have 152 career 3-pointers and are tied for fifth in the school’s record books.

Kelsie Cooley scored 10 points while freshman Deja Mattox scored 10 as well. Freshman Shannon Thomas connected on 4 of 5 shots from the field to score nine points while Brittany Schoen scored eight off the bench.

“I like the consistency of our inside game on the offensive end,” Wiedie said. “I think that we miss the post players being open from time, but overall I liked the intensity that we played with inside. That is important for us to be consistent with throughout the year because that should open up the perimeter game even more. If we are effective inside and can get open shooters on the perimeter, we are going to be an extremely hard team to match up with.”

Mulroy led all scorers with 21 points.

Indiana State plays Friday at Southeast Missouri State.
