The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Indiana State’s women’s basketball team will host its second consecutive NCAA Division II team as they wrap up exhibition play today. Southern Indiana will oppose the Sycamores at 2:05 p.m. inside Hulman Center.

The Sycamores throttled inexperienced Bellarmine 84-52 in its first exhibition contest last Sunday. ISU poured in 11-of-22 3-point attempts, five from sophomore Brittany Schoen. Schoen paced ISU with 17 points, while sophomore Deja Mattox added 15.

ISU shot well, connecting on 47.5 percent of its field goals vs. Bellarmine. The Sycamores generated 12 steals and three blocks, but did turn the ball over 15 times.

A total of 13 on ISU’s 15-player roster saw playing time, with all but one playing at least 10 minutes. Kelsey Luna, Shannon Thomas, Chelsea Buher and Moriah Hodge added nine, eight, seven and seven points, respectively.

Thomas pulled down seven rebounds, Kelsie Cooley six as ISU won the rebounding battle 43-34.

ISU will be without the services of freshmen Andrea Rademacher (broken foot) and Meaghan MacDougall (exertional compartment syndrome).

Meanwhile, Southern Indiana has already started its regular season. USI (1-2) claimed second place in the Disney Division II West Coast Tip-Off Classic last weekend.

The Screaming Eagles defeated Western Oregon University 71-64, but dropped a pair of three-point decisions, falling to San Francisco State University (62-59) and No. 8-ranked Fort Lewis College (84-81).

Junior guard Amie Newhart paces USI with a 15.7 points per game scoring average, with a season-high 20 points vs. Fort Lewis.

Other leading scorers include senior forward Anaris Sickles (10.3), sophomore guard Rinesha Soaper (9.7), sophomore forward/center Ashton Mertens (9.3) and junior guard Ellen Young (9.0). Mertens and Sickles average eight and five rebounds, respectively.

Indiana State will open its regular season at Kansas State on Saturday.
