TERRE HAUTE —
With temperatures near 80 degrees and humidity near 90 percent Tuesday afternoon, Terre Haute North sophomore John Mascari ran his fastest 5,000-meter time (15 minutes, 55.1 seconds) on the LaVern Gibson Championship Course as the North boys and girls cross country teams took home titles.
While four seconds off a personal best, Mascari and senior teammate Brandon Query set a breakneck pace from the start of the Terre Haute North Sectional, running a 4:55 opening mile to separate from the pack.
“We knew that [third-place finisher] Drew Gambill from Shakamak has a stellar kick so we were just trying to put as much space as we could between us and him,” Query said.
Mascari pulled away from his teammate as the Patriots climbed the rolling hills near the 4K mark. Query held on for second place with a time of 16:16.5 as the No. 6-ranked team in the state cruised to a sectional championship.
“He ran an awesome race,” Query said of Mascari. “I’m proud of him, being only a sophomore and all that’s pretty impressive. I couldn’t be happier that it was a guy on my own team that won it.”
Mascari said he knew early on, he could maintain his quick pace.
“After that first mile, my confidence got going and the crowd helped me out,” he said. “I just felt like I could pull away for the victory.”
The Patriots boys placed seven runners in the top 12, totaling just 18 points with its top 5.
Emily Cotterman also pulled away from the girls field, leading the Patriots to a 1-2-3 finish.
“I just tried to stay on my pace the whole time. I just did my best,” said Cotterman, whose mile pace was 6:33 for a time of 20:21.4.
Sophomore Tayler Jackson was second and senior Liz Marietta third, with Katie Shew ninth and Erin Richards 14th to pace North to the win.
Northview was a solid second place behind Alyssa Conrad (fifth, 21:35.4), Casandra Barnett (sixth, 21:44.2), Allie True (8th, 22:04.5) and Shelby Sands (10th, personal-best 22:21.1).
“Everybody would have had to set PRs to catch North, but we live to fight another day,” coach Ryand Tucker said.
Terre Haute South’s girls finished third, Shakamak fourth and South Vermillion took fifth, advancing to its first regional since the 1996 season, coach Mike Costello said.
“We ran a good race tonight. The girls have really worked hard all year,” Costello said.
Terre Haute South’s boys were a strong second, with Clay City, Northview and West Vigo rounding out the top five teams to advance to Saturday’s regional meet at Brown County.
Taylor Head and Morgan Goetschel were 10th and 11th respectively for the Braves.
“The goal was second place,” Head said. “We knew our job was to get up ahead of West Vigo’s first runner [Andrew Kump], and the others fall in behind him.”
Kump, a freshman, was 15th as a young Vikings’ squad took fifth place. Connor Strain paced Northview in ninth as the Knights beat their Western Indiana Conference rival Vikings for the first time this season, coach Chad Smith said.
With 120 points, the Knights were two behind their smaller Clay County rival, Clay City. The Eels advanced to their 10th straight regional behind top-20 finishes from Parker Modesitt, Jesse Vansickle, Braxton Griffith.
“That’s not bad for a school our size,” coach Keith Jones said.
In addition to Shakamak’s Gambill, North Central senior Ethan Jacob (seventh) and South Vermillion’s Brice Webster (13th) advanced to the regional by making the top 15.
West Vigo freshman Sarah Hudson advanced to the regional with an 11th-place finish.
