Hulman Links, led by Chris Cassell, claims interclub honors; Country Club of TH second

TERRE HAUTE Host Hulman Links won the Interclub golf championship played in ideal weather conditions Sunday.

Scores for Hulman Links ranged from medalist Chris Cassell’s 68 to an 81 for a 605 tally; eight scores were counted from each 10-player teams.

The Country Club of Terre Haute placed second in the expanded Terre Haute Golf Association event with 649. Mike Nakai was low pro of the six teams with 74.

Geneva Hills was third in the team totals with 657 followed by Matthews Park 662, Forest Park 664 and Rea Park 667.

Cassell went 32-36 in his 4-under-par round.

Tom Jones, the city champ playing for Hulman Links, and Rich Schelsky, playing for Geneva Hills, tied for second low with 73s while Nakai and Scott Hess, playing for Matthews Park, each carded 74.

Golf events coming up are a two-man best-ball tournament this weekend at Geneva Hills and a backward scramble at Hulman Links on Nov. 2.

n Hamilton Southeastern wins — At Franklin, No. 1-ranked Hamilton Southeastern won the team championship in the Indiana high school girls state finals concluded Saturday at The Legends of Indiana.

The Royals had rounds of 315 and 312 for the low score of 627. Richmond shot 305 the first day and finished second with 637. Columbus North shot 642 to edge Roncalli for third by one shot and fifth-place Martinsville by two shots.

Richmond sophomore Trisha Witherby had a finals-record 66 in the first round and took medalist honors with 1-under-par 143, one shot better than Emily Podzielinski of Noblesville.

Breanna Patz of Avon carded 147 for third and was awarded the mental attitude award.
