Tough field as usual for Men’s City golf

By David Hughes
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Six former winners, including 2005 champion Scott Hess, are entered for the 2006 WTHI News 10 Men’s City Golf Championships.

The 173-man field will play one round Saturday at Rea Park and one round Sunday at Hulman Links this weekend and the following weekend, resulting in a total of 72 holes.

Hess, a Clinton resident and former Geneva Hills pro, placed second in the Spaghetti Open last weekend at Matthews Park.

“I really have not played a lot of golf this year,” said Hess, who added that he probably wouldn’t have time to practice much this week.

Other former champs competing in the men’s city this year are Ted Kaperak (1983, 1988, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2001), Tom Jones (1986, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 2000), Dave Brown (1989), Troy Farris (2003, 2004) and Jim Winning (2002).

Jones, 53, hasn’t entered the tournament since the last time he won it in 2000. He did capture the Indiana Senior Open title in May at Plymouth, so he hasn’t been a stranger to golf.

“My game feels pretty good,” Jones said. “I’m not coaching [freshman football at Terre Haute North High School] anymore, so I have more time to devote to golf.”

Jones expects the competition to be fierce, as usual.

“There’s a lot of former winners,” he noted. “You’ve got your usual suspects with Kappy [Kaperak] and Brownie [Brown]. Then you’ve got Chris Cassell and Troy Farris… The caliber of golf around here is getting better and better. It’ll just be a matter of putting four solid rounds together.”

Hess acknowledged that Jones will be tough to beat, but so will others.

“There’s a lot of guys who will be tough to beat,” he added. “I probably got lucky last year, to be honest.”

Last year, Hess posted a 2-over-par 74 in the final round at Hulman Links to hold off Brown and Kaperak amidst rainy conditions. His four-round score was 283.

Jon Holloway, PGA director of golf at Hulman Links, said other top contenders for the championship include Brian Silvers, Scott Kluesner, Gregg Kluesner and Chris Keen.

The first tee time Saturday is 7:50 a.m.
