North boys validate state ranking
Boys cross country team places second

TERRE HAUTE —
Among all the talented high school runners Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course, the biggest statement may have been made by Terre Haute North’s boys.
With Brandon Query finishing fourth and John Mascari just a second behind him in sixth, the Patriots showed their preseason top-10 cross country ranking was quite legitimate, as they were outscored only by Carmel at the Terre Haute Savings Bank Invitational.
North actually finished third, edged for the team runner-up spot by Carroll (Allen) on the basis of the sixth runners’ places. But the meet, formerly known as the State Preview, featured almost 40 teams and provided plenty of opportunities for all competitors to be tested.
“There were quality teams in the field today,” coach Lon McDonald pointed out, “so now we know what it’s going to be like running against the best teams in the state.
“To have the top five guys all under 17 minutes [for the 5K run], for the first time on this course this year, that’s pretty good effort,” McDonald added. “I was very pleased with the short interval between our first and fifth runners [40.5 seconds, to be exact]. For our team to be successful, that’s what it’s going to take.”
Query, a solid No. 2 runner for the Patriots last year, showed he’s ready to take over the leadership spot on the team from 2008 graduate Zach Mayhew.
“I tried to just go out fast,” he explained after his race. “Getting up front [right away] mentally helped me stay there.
“I hit my goals [time-wise] … and teamwise we ran awesome.”
“All his hard work has paid off,” McDonald said of Query, “and today he brought Mascari right along with him.
“He’s really developed into a leader this year. He just quietly does his job.”
Carmel was the team champion for both boys and girls; although Mascari beat Carmel’s second-best male runner, the female Greyhounds had three of the top five finishers.
Terre Haute South placed 16th and Northview 18th in the Class 3A boys competition; North was ninth, while the Knights were 14th and the Braves 15th in the girls race.
Among smaller schools, Greencastle’s girls were runners-up and Sullivan seventh in 2A competition while Shakamak and Riverton Parke were the only girls teams to have at least five competitors in Class A. Among boys teams, an emerging West Vigo team was fifth with Greencastle seventh and Sullivan 10th in 2A, while Clay City was second and Shakamak, North Vermillion and Riverton Parke placed fifth through seventh respectively in Class A.
North’s girls probably could have moved up at least a couple of places in the team standings had they been at full strength. Junior Lindy Jones was unavailable because of a back problem, so freshman Emily Cotterman led the Patriots with a 26th-place overall finish.
“I just went out there and did my best, tried to keep my pace,” said Cotterman. “I just wanted to run a good race, since I hadn’t run a 5K on this course yet.
“I want Lindy back as soon as possible. I love running with her,” Cotterman added.
“This meet was just to get us into the season,” coach Mike Dason of the Patriot girls team said. “How we do [this early] doesn’t matter; our end goal is to get back to the state finals.
“Now these girls have a chance to compare themselves to other runners [in the state],” Dason added. “I was happy with how our top three [Cotterman, Liz Marietta and Katie Shew] finished.”
Shakamak’s Drew Gambill, a state finalist a year ago, had the best time among Class A boys and was 13th overall while a trio of freshmen — Kaleb Blair and brothers Andrew and Nathan Kump — were the top three finishers for the Vikings.
Top three Class A girls finishers were Jennifer Hugh of White River Valley, Casey Fougerousse of Shakamak and Carmela Roeschlein of Clay City, with North Vermillion’s Bethany Chew in fifth place. Greencastle’s Sara Culler had the eighth-best Class 2A girls time.
All varsity competitors ran together, with the individual class results sorted by computer. Runners other than the top seven from each team competed in open races for girls and boys that followed — with much larger fields, two examples being that Indianapolis Cathedral brought 58 girls and Carmel 53
