Close finishes could be in order in two divisions of today’s final round of the city junior golf tournament.
The final totals were set following second-round play Wednesday in warm conditions at Hulman Links. The final 18 holes will be played today at Rea Park.
Three shots separate the three leaders in the girls 15-17 group, while Zach Hosking has a four-shot lead over Thomas Goss in the boys 15-17 totals.
Three Terre Haute South girls are at the top of the girls 15-17 leaderboard. Sloane Engle leads with 165 followed by Kelsey Fuqua at 166 and Katelyn Gosnell at 167.
Rachel Welker is the leader in the girls 13-14 division with 170 and has a chance to take the overall girls championship with a good final round.
Hosking had the best 18-hole score at Hulman Links with 1-under-par 71, duplicating his first-round score, and he stands at 142 going into the finals. Goss’ total is 146; he has the only other sub-par 18-hole score with 69 at Rea Park.
Jackson Jarvis is third with 151 followed by James Stewart at 152 and Shelby Stewart with 153. Tyler Schrohe and Brandon Bekkering both are at 154 to round out the top six.
Hosking is going for a repeat in the older boys division. Goss has won his age group the past three years in the tournament.
Two of the young players continued their fine play at Hulman Links.
Jaron Hutsom, who is from Chillicothe, Ill., has shot 37 both days for 74 and has an eight-shot lead over Luke Dugger in the 10-and-under division.
Hutson earlier won his age group in the Rea Park Junior Classic when he carded his best score, a 36. “I have been playing about a year,” he said.
Nathan Pirtle shot 38 at Rea Park and followed it with par-36 at Hulman Links for 74. He has a 10-shot lead over Adam LaGrange in the 10-and-under bracket.
Pirtle has the record nine-hole score in the city, shooting 30 at Rea Park, and is going for his fourth title in the city. He also plays on the Pepsi Tour and is in first place in the championship totals.
He will be in the sixth grade at Carlisle Elementary School and has been playing competitively since he was 6 years of age.
LaGrange will be in the 7th grade at St. Patrick’s School. He also competes on the Pepsi Tour and ranks 11th after playing in two events.
He has had rounds of 43 and 41.
Sam Pollock followed his 75 at Rea Park with an 83 at Hulman Links and leads Ryan Bahr by 11 shots in the boys 13-14 division. Welker has a 12-shot lead over Bailey Craft in the girls 13-14 totals.
The younger boys will tee off earlier today, playing the back nine at Rea Park, to avoid playing in the heat of what is expected to be another warm day.
