Metro Roundup: Wayne Newton sneaks past Danville 8-7

Dougie Collett’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth provided the last lead change Wednesday night as Wayne Newton Post 346 won a seesaw American Legion baseball game against Danville (Ill.) Post 210 at Terre Haute North.

After taking leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the first two innings, the home team found itself behind 6-2 going into the bottom of the fifth.

Scoring in each of the next three innings, Post 346 tied the score only to have the visitors take the lead again with a single run in the top of the eighth.

Post 346 plays this coming weekend at the Moline (Ill.) Tournament, beginning with an 11 a.m. EDT game on Friday.

• Post 346 juniors finish third — At Hammond, the Wayne Newton Post 346 junior team lost its semifinal game Sunday against Kokomo but bounced back for a win over the host team in the third-place game of the Hammond Great Lakes Invitational.

The Post 346 juniors are now 18-5.

Volleyball

• Sycamore recruits mentioned — Indiana State’s 2009 volleyball recruiting class received a honorable mention this week among the top classes in the nation as chosen by PrepVolleyball.com.

“We have worked hard in recruiting the athletes that are going to help us as we continue to turn this program around,” said second-year coach Traci Dahl. “I am really excited about this class of student-athletes and anxiously wait being able to get them together with our returning veterans in August.

“These recruits addressed the needs that I saw we had last season,” Dahl said. “I expect them to come in and have an immediate impact on the quality of our program and our ability to do well in the Missouri Valley Conference.”

Shea Doran, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker from Martinsville, and Auriel Armstrong, a 6-1 middle blocker from Long Beach, Calif., are joined by five outside hitters: 6-0 Christin Fullenkamp from Botkins, Ohio; 5-11 Morgan Dall from Breese, Ill.; 5-10 Aralena Haynes from Douglasville, Ga.; 5-9 Emily Mozwecz from Chesterton and 5-10 junior college transfer Maira Charun Valdez from Lima, Peru.

PrepVolleyball.com ranked the top 30 recruiting classes, with the next 15 listed as “Highest Honorable Mention” and 45 others receiving either “High Honorable Mention” or “Honorable Mention.”

Six schools from the Missouri Valley Conference received recognition: Creighton and Northern Iowa getting Highest Honorable Mention, Wichita State High Honorable Mention, and Indiana State, Drake and Illinois State each receiving Honorable Mention.

Golf

• Neff wins Open — At Franklin, Aimee Neff won the Indiana Women’s Open concluded Tuesday at The Legends of Indiana.

The Michigan State golfer had rounds of 71 and 72 to finish with a 1-under-par 143, four shots better than two golfers tied for second.

Defending champ Kristi Piepenbrink tied for 11th with 153. Rachael Pruett of Linton tied for 20th with 155 and Indiana State golfer Kelsea Ice shot 171.



• Baker, Goss compete — At Culver, Kade Baker of Brazil shot an 8-over-par 79 to tie for 17th and Thomas Goss of Terre Haute tied for 38th with an 83 at the Indiana Golf Foundation Masters tournament at Mystic Hills Golf Club on Wednesday.



• Sycamore strong overseas — Indiana State sophomore Astrid Parsson has enjoyed a strong summer season in her native Sweden, including a first-place finish at the CGK Open.

She was also second in the Sofiedal Junior Open, fifth at the Skandie Tour Riks No. 2 and 18th at the Skandie Tour Elit Flickor No. 3 event.

Basketball

• Valley players chosen — Three Wabash Valley high school girls have been selected to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association’s Top 100 Workout at Ben Davis on July 11.

Among those participating are Haley Seibert of Terre Haute South, Adrianne Francis of Turkey Run and Hillary Lively of North Vermillion. Whitney Malin of Wood Memorial, who plays with Seibert and Francis on the Indiana Explosion, was also picked.

Miscellaneous

• Rose guides honored — Rose-Hulman earned three awards for its 2008-09 athletic media guides, including two soccer publications named “Best in the Nation” by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The 44-page men’s and women’s soccer media guide placed first in the category of “Multi-Sport Guides” in Division C, which consists of NCAA Division III, NAIA and junior colleges. The 24-page men’s soccer NCAA Division III Tournament media guide, compiled after the team earned the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship, also earned a first-place finish in the “Postseason Guides” category in the Division B and C combined contest that included NCAA Division II programs.

In addition, Rose-Hulman received a fourth-place award for its 2008-09 women’s basketball media guide.

Sports information director Kevin Lanke and his student staff have won 21 national awards from CoSIDA since 2002.
