Horse racing heats up at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Ill. — Some top times were recorded Tuesday in 15 heats of harness racing at the Martinsville (Ill.) Agricultural Fair.

Two sub-2-minute miles topped the list on a nearly perfect day for racing with temperatures in the 70s.

Armbro Barnes, a 3-year-old pacer, was fastest in 1 minute, 58.1 seconds in winning its second race of the season.

Trained and driven by Lavern Hostetler, the pacer earlier was clocked in 1:57 in setting a track record at Marshall.

Hostetler is a Hall of Fame driver who was born in Indiana. He said he was competing at Martinsville for the first time.

Glass Pack was second quickest in 1:59.4 as the 2-year-old pacer won in its race debut. Tom Simmons is the trainer and driver of the gelding that posted one of the times in the state in its class.

Trendy L was another winner in its first career start as the 2-year-old filly pacer won in 2:00.4. Kelcey Perymond was in the bike in the eighth race of the day.

Perymond was one of three drivers to win twice, coming back to win in the ninth race with Darlene which has two wins and two seconds in four starts.

Rick Schrock and Darry Birch were the others to win twice.

Schrock was the driver for Vanished, a 4-year-old trotter that won its second in a row and now has won nearly $190,000 in its career.

Schrock also was the driver for LB Richey, a 2-year-old pacer that also won in its first career start in 2:02.0.

Birch was the driver of 2-year-old pacer Beware Of R Party, winner of the final race of the day, and for 4-year-old pacer Princess Abigail which won for the second time this season.
