Metro Roundup: Valley all-star football game set for Saturday

It’s all-star football week, with nearly 100 recent high school graduates reporting Sunday for their first practices for Saturday’s Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star Game.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. Saturday at Terre Haute South; Indiana State’s Memorial Stadium is unavailable this season because of a construction project.

Practices for both teams are scheduled each morning this week, and the 2009 WVFCA Hall of Fame Class — Jerry Anderson, Jim Hartman, Gene Shike and Al Werneke — will be honored at Friday’s All-Star Game Banquet in Hulman Center. Banquet reservations are available through Tom Jones at (812) 878-4572 or Greg Barrett at (812) 201-9600.

Horse racing

• Racing slated — At Martinsville, Ill., thoroughbred racing is scheduled today at the Martinsville Agricultural Fair.

Auto racing

• Santos wins again — At Kalamazoo, Mich., Bobby Santos won a U.S. Auto Club feature for the second night in a row Saturday, taking Saturday’s main at Kalamazoo Speedway for sprint cars.

Santos won a midget race Friday in Iowa and was fast qualifier for Saturday’s program. He led the final 16 laps to win the 40-lap race. Jerry Coons Jr. was second and Tracy Hines, who led the first 24 turns, was third.

Dave Darland took seventh and has a two-point lead over Levi Jones going into a Friday race at Richmond, Va.
