Terre Haute South boys claim MIC golf title

By Tom Reck
Tribune-Star Correspondent

TERRE HAUTE Terre Haute South dominated the awards presentation for the Metropolitan Interscholastic Championships for boys golf teams Saturday at Hulman Links.

The Braves took team honors, shooting 308 in warm, breezy conditions to finish five shots in front of Carmel and North Central with 313 scores. Carmel took second place with its fifth score.

Rounding out the team tally: Center Grove 315, Warren Central 325, Ben Davis 333, Terre Haute North 341, Lawrence North 348.

Senior Phillip Myers paced the Braves and took medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73, two shots better than Tom Workman of North Central and Justin Isenthal of Carmel. Eight players who shot 77 or better earned all-conference honors.

Myers carded 37 on the front and 36 on the back for his score that is one shot higher than his best ever at the course. “I shot 72 once,” he said of competitive scores.

He said he hit most of the fairway and greens as he recorded two birdies, one double bogey and a bogey in his round. “My ball striking was strong,” he said.

It was the best 18-hole score of the season for Myers, who plans to attend Purdue.

South’s score set a record for the best in a MIC match played at Hulman Links. Center Grove had the old mark of 309, set in 1999. South also has the all-time league mark of 299 set at The Legends of Indiana Course in 2003

South now has won MIC titles three times. Carmel had won three of the past year, winning in 2007 at Hulman Links.

Coach Chris Cassell said he was pleased that everyone in the lineup played well at the same time. That lineup was made up of two freshmen, two seniors and one junior.

The Braves have not lost in nine-hole matches and have finished in the top five of all matches. “I am really pleased with that record. Our worst finish was fifth out of 20 teams,” said the coach.

He said Saturday was the first time for South and Carmel to be in the same tournament. Carmel finished second in the state last year and has two players back from the 2007 lineup that also won the MIC. Its best score this year has been 310.

The 308 is the second lowest of the season for South which recorded its low score in the Northview Invitational to start the season.

Freshman Jackson Jarvis played No. 5 for the team and gave a hint of what was to come when he shot a 36 on the front. He finished with 78 in spite of having a triple bogey on No. 11. “The back started bad,” he said of his round.

The Braves have one regular match left before the sectional that will be played June 2 at Rolling Meadows. “We’ll have some Ryder Cup-like practices to get ready,” said the coach.

John Callahan and Thomas Anderson paced North with their 82 scores. Coach Chuck Payne said they and Jeff Ackman are set for the postseason lineup. “We’ll have six players going for the other two spots,” he said.

• Last match — Saturday apparently was the last MIC match for Al Danko, the coach at Warren Central. He plans to retire from teaching.

He has been in the Warren Township system for 31 years and has been coach of girls and boys golf teams for 16.

“We have had some good players and good teams. I have enjoyed doing it … I appreciate what everyone does here at Hulman Links for the MIC tournament,” he said.
