Woodrow Wilson wins boys, girls track titles

By Craig Pearson
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Meet announcer John Lentz was beginning to sound like a broken record due to the number of meet records broken Friday in the final day of the Vigo County middle school track and field championships at Terre Haute North.

The middle schoolers breaking the records weren’t complaining though.

Woodrow Wilson eighth grader Emily Cotterman, who set the 3,200-meter run mark at last year’s meet, snapped a record that had stood for 21 years. Cotterman’s time of 2 minutes, 26 seconds broke Jenny Morris’ mark of 2:30.2 set in 1987 for Honey Creek.

It helped that Cotterman was pushed by Sarah Scott seventh grader Tapring Goatee, who jumped out to the early lead. Goatee had defeated Cotterman in the 800 and 1,600 during the season, but Cotterman wasn’t going to let her pull away. Cotterman passed Goatee about 300 yards into the race and didn’t let it go.

Woodrow Wilson coach Greg Chiado was pumped up watching his standout runner who would lead the Warriors’ 1,600 relay team to a meet-record performance about 20 minutes later.

“That [800] was out of this world! That was 10 seconds faster than she’s run all year long,” said Chiado, who was screaming in support of Cotterman down the front straightaway. “She had a gameplan and she went after it. She told me before the race she was going for it.”

Goatee’s time of 5:21.35 shattered the old record in the 1,600 of 5:36 by Shana Slavens in 1991.

The Wilson mile relay team ran a time of 4:28.89 to grab a record that had stood since 1992. Molly McKee was fading at the end, but “she kept fighting,” Cotterman said.

The Wilson seventh- and eighth-grade girls had the highest scoring day of the team winners, outscoring Honey Creek 141-91 for a second straight title.

The Wilson seventh- and eighth-grade boys were also in a festive mood, dousing coach Jim Cottom with a cooler of ice water in the infield.

Cam Quinn, a future Terre Haute North athlete, bolted to victory in the 100, 200 and 400. Quinn’s 200 and 400 times — 24.81 and 54.80 respectively — were one-half a second off meet records.

“I’m ready for the next year’s track season. I’m going to miss running at Woodrow Wilson for coach Cottom,” Quinn said.

Quinn got 30 of Wilson’s 103 points as the Warriors went back and forth with Honey Creek before coming out on top at the end.

Honey Creek’s sixth grade boys edged Wilson 104-103 1/2 behind Jack Harbaugh’s win in the 100 and school-record second-place finish in the 400. Harbaugh lost to Wilson’s Jacob Johnson’s blistering 59.33 run in the 400.

Johnson set a new meet record in the 400, adding to the new meet record he set in long jump on Wednesday.

Otter Creek’s girls took home first as Jasmine Allen won long jump, but took second in the 100 and 200.

“They’re just a tremendous group to work with. They have the heart, the drive, the will and the talent,” coach Maria Croft said of the Otters.

Sarah Scott’s Larae Clemons was first in the 200 with a meet-record run of 28.80, edging Allen by one-hundredth of a second at 28.81. Summer Scank of Sarah Scott also beat the old meet record at 28.95. Clemons also set a new mark in the 100 with a time of 13.73.

Also in the sixth-grade, Jessi Conley of Otter Creek set a new mark in the 800 with a time of 2:35.73.
