The home team was happy to get a pair of wins Tuesday evening in high school track and field.
The visiting team was happy just to be able to run.
Paris defeated visiting Casey twice, the boys winning 94-46 and the girls 99-42 in the outdoor openers for all four squads. For the Warriors, trying to train on a cinder track during a rainy spring, the term “outdoor opener” was almost literally true.
“We’re not in shape. We know that,” said coach Chris Seaton of the Warrior girls team, explaining his school’s training predicament. “We were just happy to get on a track.”
The Paris girls won all but two events in their meet, getting multiple wins from Allie Piper, Kasey Hamilton, Katelyn Keller and Allison Englum.
“I’m really pleased with how it went,” coach Chuck Millis of the Tigers said afterward. “It was a really good meet.”
Millis also pointed out the work done by his team’s distance runners, and the coaching help he’s getting in that area from former Tiger star Bessie (Fulk) Rigdon. “It was a nice way to start it out,” Rigdon agreed.
Casey’s boys had a few more individual victories, but the Tigers got multiple wins in that meet too from Zach Batson, Ryan Kirby, Levi Eslinger, Derek Abernathy and Grayson Thomas.
“I was pretty pleased with the effort of the kids,” said coach Mike Brouwer of the Tigers, “and a little surprised. We’ve always had close meets with Casey.”
Brouwer also praised the work of his team’s relay foursomes and its distance runners — Thomas got both his wins in the 1,600 and 3,200 — and also singled out thrower Blane Grimes.
“We’re just trying to see who’s running where,” said Casey boys coach Rick Knust. “We haven’t gotten outside much.
Among the Casey winners, Knust was most impressed by his 800-meter relay team and of the winning shot put performance by freshman Clinton Scott. “He went nearly 43 feet,” Knust pointed out.
Seaton noted the winning performance by Heidi Dahnke in the 400-meter run, a respectable time by his 400-meter relay foursome and some promising early showings by thrower Kari Davis, sprinter Kristen Vitaniemi and distance runner Tiffany Slattery. “[Slattery’s] time will drop considerably,” Seaton predicted. “She’s more of a warm-weather runner.”
All four coaches mentioned they’d be watching the weather later this week. Both schools have meets scheduled on Thursday.
