Titans snag another Colt, sign lineman Scott to multiyear deal

By Tom James
Tribune-Star Correspondent

INDIANAPOLIS The list of former Indianapolis Colts currently playing for the Tennessee Titans has apparently grown a bit larger over the last few days. Offensive guard Jake Scott, an unrestricted free agent for the Colts, has reportedly agreed to terms on a four-year deal with Tennessee. According to a story in Monday’s Nashville Tennessean, Scott was expected to complete negotiations with the AFC South team Monday. The proposed contract could average approximately $5 million per year.

Neither the Titans or Scott’s agent, Ken Staninger, have yet to confirm the agreement.

If the deal is completed, the former University of Idaho standout will probably take the place of offensive guard Jacob Bell in the Titans’ starting lineup. Bell inked a free agent deal with St. Louis last week. Tennessee has already inked two other free agents, tight end Alge Crumpler (Atlanta) and brought back defensive end Jevon Kearse (Philadelphia).

Scott, who also received interested from Denver and Houston, started 55 consecutive games with the Colts at right offensive guard and played in 60 total games after being a fifth-round draft pick in 2004. He could end up joining outside linebacker David Thornton and cornerback Nick Harper as former Indianapolis players on the Tennessee roster.

Another former Colts starter, defensive tackle Corey Simon, played briefly for the Titans last season before opting to retire due to complications from an ongoing medical condition. Tight end Ben Hartstock, a third-round draft pick by Indianapolis in 2004, is an unrestricted free agent and may not be with the Titans when preseason workouts begin in May. He visited with Atlanta officials last week.

Outside linebacker Gilbert Gardner, who played with Tennessee last season, is also currently an unrestricted free agent. Gardner was a third-round pick by Indianapolis in 2004.
