Terre Haute North defeated Evansville Reitz 66-49 to get a weekend split in high school boys basketball Saturday night.

The Patriots led from the start against the visiting Panthers in rebounding from Friday’s defeat at Indianapolis North Central.

“We got off to a good start and maintained it. It was a necessity for us to come back and play well after [last night],” said North Coach Jim Jones.

The Patriots had a 19-9 lead after one period, making 6 of 13 shots with four 3-pointers. Nate Blank hit his third straight 3-pointer to open the second stanza for a 13-point advantage and North was up 29-20 at the intermission.

The Patriots took complete control of the contest in the third canto, hitting 7 of 12 shots with four 3-pointers — three by Matt Myers — and took a 51-32 lead into the final frame.

The Panthers cut the lead to five points at 33-28 on a basket by Daimion Garrett but North used a 13-1 spurt to go up 46-29. Myers had six points and Blank five in the run.

“We hit our 3-pointers, played with consistency and contained their scorers,” said Coach Jones.

He said he and his staff had been concerned with Reitz’ rebounding going into the game, especially on the offensive boards.

The Panthers had a slight 28-25 edge with Garrett grabbing a game-high nine and Kevin King seven.

Jason Gilmore pulled down six for the Patriots. Steven Jeffers, Blank and Johnny Mazequie each had five.

“We had good balance,” said Coach Jones.

Blank led the Patriots with 21 points and Myers finished with 19, hitting 6 of 8 shots with four treys. Blank was good on 7 of 12 shots and also had four treys.

Jeffers and Gilmore both scored nine points.

Arnie Juncker led the Panthers with 12 points. Garrett and Houston Hobbs both had 10.

North improved to 13-5 with the victory and will have a week to get ready for Center Grove next Saturday. The JV game will begin at noon at North.

Originally, the Patriots had been slated to play Vincennes on Thursday but that game was moved to the first half of the schedule.

“It will be good to have a day off,” said Coach Jones.

Reitz dropped its fifth game and is 6-10 for the season. Four sophomores started for the Panthers while North started three juniors.

Both teams had faced ranked Class 4A opponents Friday. North met No. 2 North Central and Reitz took on No. 5 Jeffersonville.
