A pair of high school bowlers have earned the title state finalist.
Kara Bunting, a senior at Terre Haute South and 2004 Indiana High School Bowling girls individual state champion (as a sophomore), placed second in the individual competition at the IHSB Noblesville Semistate at Cooper’s Stardust Bowl on Saturday.
Bunting earned her state finals slot by firing a three-game series of 621, but was defeated by Lisa MacAllister of Brownsburg 209-184 in the final stepladder game to determine the Semistate champion.
Allen Breshears, a senior at Terre Haute North, qualified for the state finals for the second straight year with a 588 series to finish seventh in the boys individual competition.
North’s boys team had a team score of 2,879 good enough for fifth place in the 12-team field. However, only the top four teams advanced to the state finals, the Patriots missing the cut by just 15 pins.
Two other South bowlers, Brittany Gambill and Jordan Stone competed in the semistate but did not advance to the state finals.
High school regional — Breshears was the boys individual champion in the Indiana High School Bowling Southwest Regional at the Terre Haute Bowling Center on Feb. 11.
Breshears was the top qualifier with a three-game series of 716 then defeated Adam Marchino of Jasper 224-215 in the Regional championship game.
Gambill was the second-high qualifier in the girls individual competition with a three-game set of 612. Gambill finished third after losing to eventual Regional champion Karmyn Mosley of Lawrence Central 203-158 in the semifinal match.
Breshears and Gambill advanced to the Noblesville Semistate along with Stone (618) and Bunting (573).
In the team competition, Terre Haute North’s boys team — coached by Phil Cooper — placed fifth overall with a score of 2,999 and also advanced to the Noblesville Semistate.

Cox on No. 3-ranked team — A familiar face to Terre Haute bowlers can be viewed in an action shot on the bowling page of her college website.
Sara Cox, a senior at Central Missouri State University, is shown releasing the ball during competition at the CMSU Region/NCAA Duals at the University Union Cosmo Bowl in Warrensburg, Mo., on Jan. 20.
CMSU is ranked third nationally in the first 2005-06 season national poll released this season by the National Tenpins Coaches Association. The Jennies have finished as runner-up in the NCAA Women’s Bowling Championships — the first two years of this NCAA event.
Two-time defending national champion University of Nebraska is ranked No. 1 team in this poll. The Huskers have won the past two NCAA national championships, defeating CMSU in the title match both years.
The Jennies, 42-6-1 in NCAA head-to-head matches this season, have won the Arkansas State Lady Indians Invitational in Jonesboro, Ark., National Team Match Games in St. Louis and the Southern Varsity Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
Cox was the Jennies’ top performer at the NCAA Mid-Winter Classic in January, hosted by Arkansas State University, finishing 10th individually with an average of 197.20. CMSU ended in third-place in the six-team event despite getting a victory over eventual champion Nebraska.
The Jennies were back in action this weekend at the Morgan State Invitational in Baltimore. This year’s NCAA Women’s Bowling Championship returns to Houston on April 13-15.

Super Bowl IV — Fast becoming one of the most competitive tournaments for bowlers in the Wabash Valley is Imperial Lanes’ annual Super Bowl A-B-C-D-E tournament.
In fashion with the National Football League’s use of Roman numerals, this year’s tournament was titled “Super Bowl IV.”
The five-man team of Dave Elder, Rick Rogers (the best “B” bowler in Terre Haute), Mike Gambill, Dan Hunt and veteran bowler Paul Cherpekai was the winner — claiming the $1,500 first prize purse — by 52 pins over the quintet of Jerry Lee Hoopingarner, Marc Pruett, Jerry Norris, John Akers and Anya Fisher.
