SOFTBALL SCENE: Sign-up now under way for city slowpitch championship

TERRE HAUTE — Arrangements for the Show-Me’s city slowpitch softball tournaments have been completed and interested teams are encouraged to sign up.

Building on last year’s city tournament, the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department and newfound sponsor Show-Me’s will be expanding the tournament offerings in 2011. This year, tournament play is being offered for coed recreation and coed competitive teams as well as men’s teams.

Tournament play for the coed divisions will take place the week of July 18-22. Entry fee is $100 per team. Each team is guaranteed a minimum of four games. Entry deadline is July 15.

Men’s play will take place the week of July 25-29. The entry fee and four-game minimum are the same as for the coed divisions. Entry deadline is July 22.

With teams from Paris, Ill., Jasonville and Brazil expressing interest this year, it looks as if the 2011 Show-Me’s city slowpitch softball tournaments could be a wide-open affair.

Vigo Domingo’s, aka ByeAux Softball, won another local men’s round-robin tournament last weekend. After emerging from pool play with a 2-1 record and No. 1 seed, Vigo Domingo’s recorded a 17-3 drubbing of Pizza King and concluded the day’s play with an 18-8 win over Paris, Ill.

Leading the way for the winners offensively was Zach Morgan. After being relatively dormant during pool play, Morgan erupted for seven consecutive hits in the single-elimination portion of the tournament. Included in his seven hits were five home runs.

Also putting on a power display was Dano Armstrong, playing for the Hitmen squad. Armstrong stroked five homers in his last two games.

Final standings for the day: Vigo Domingo’s 4-1; Paris, Ill., 3-2; Hitmen 2-2; and Pizza King 0-4.

Those interested in an esoteric discussion of ASA vs. NSA softball and the impact of composite bats on the game of softball, it can be found by going to the website and checking out the entries made by Steve Boone.

Boone, owner-operator of the Avon softball complex, has long offered opinion pieces concerning topics germane to today’s fast-paced game. They are well worth the reading for those interested in the evolution of slowpitch softball.

Recreational or Class E men’s teams interested in participating in tournament play before the ASA Class E state tournament can contact Nick at (812) 251-9936. The pre-state tournament has been slated for July 16 and is restricted to recreation/E teams.

Cost is $150 to participate.

Good luck to Outkast and Crawlworks as they ventured to Bloomington and Bedford respectively this weekend. Outkast is participating in the always-prestigious Bloomington Invitational Tournament, while Crawlworks entered the rain-delayed Tanel 360/Dudley Challenge Series.

See ya at the park.
