Valley softball teams fail to impress in ASA tourneys

TERRE HAUTE — “Disappointing” might be the operative word to describe the outcome for Wabash Valley softball efforts in the ASA men’s slowpitch Class D (North) and men’s slowpitch Class E (North) state tournaments last weekend.

Valley teams came away with only two wins in the 12 games in which they participated.

The ASA MSP Class D North tournament in Kokomo was especially disappointing. Crawlworks/All American Auto Repair and Light Out finished with 0-2 marks. Crawlworks/All American Auto Repair, recent winner of the Tanel 360/Dudley Challenge Series, dropped games to Mullins Fitness 13-5 and H&R Block 11-6. Lights Out lost to Taser Softball, the eventually tourney champion, and U.S. Furniture by a 10-9 score.

Both teams look to get back to their winning ways when they participate in the ASA MSP Class D (South) state tournament in early August.

The three Valley participants in the ASA MSP Class E tournament managed to fare somewhat better, but only slightly. In the 38-team affair hosted by Crawfordsville, the Hitmen and Cahill’s each finished with a 1-2 record, while the Eagles 291 team went 0-2.

Cahill’s opened tourney play with a solid 23-10 win over Garnett’s Comfort Gallery before dropping games to Hanson Materials 12-2 and Double Play 10-9. Like Cahill’s, the Hitmen earned an opening-round win over Armed Forces 15-3 before losing to Hanson Materials 14-5 and Golden Corral. Eagles 291 lost to Team Forbo 11-9 and Golden Corral 17-8.

The Hitmen and Eagles 291 are participating in the ASA MSP E South state tournament this weekend in Bloomington.

The Outkast squad captured the Show-Me’s men’s slowpitch city tournament with a 4-0 mark. Outkast recorded wins over Tabco Beef O’Brady’s (18-16), Pizza King (17-16), Cahill’s (19-17) and Tom’s Stars (14-2).

Playing for Outkast were Kevin Nickles, Chad Cress, Travis Sutton, Kevin Wilt, Tommy “Sarge” Slaughter, Todd Hein, Mike Walker, David See, Dano Armstrong, Brandon Vest and Seth Cosgray.

Outkast ventured to South Bend this weekend to participate in the ASA MSP Class B state tournament. Its opening game was slated to be against a powerful Street Kids team from South Bend/Mishawaka.

The final standings for the city tournament were as follows: Outkast 4-0, Pizza King 3-1, Tabco/Beef O’Brady’s 2-2, Cahill’s 1-3, Tom’s Stars 0-4.

Of particular note in the city tournament was the effort put forth by the Cahill’s team. After returning from the ASA MSP Class E state tournament, where it lost to Hanson Materials and Double Play, it suffered three losses by a total of four runs — 19-18 in eight innings to Pizza King, 19-18 to Tabco/Beef O’Brady’s and 19-17 to Outkast. That’s a good showing, despite its 1-3 tourney record.
