Softball Scene: Get scoop on upcoming men’s, co-ed tournaments in Wabash Valley

By John Benton
Tribune-Star Correspondent

TERRE HAUTE — Several questions have arisen concerning the upcoming city tournaments for men’s and co-ed softball teams. In an attempt to dispel any rumors and to address the questions, I will now address callers’ concerns.

The men’s tournament is scheduled to start Tuesday, July 6, and conclude on Thursday, July 8. The co-ed tournament is scheduled for a Monday, July 12, start and will conclude no later than Thursday, July 15. The respective tourney entry deadlines are noon July 2 for the men’s tournament and noon July 9 for the

co-ed tourney.

The maximum number of teams allowed will be six per tournament. To date, the men’s tourney has four teams entered while the co-ed tournament has three teams committed to play.

For the men’s tournament, the home run rule will be two and one up, while the co-ed tourney home run limit will be two per game for the men.

All proceeds from the tournaments will be donated to the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department.

Softballs for tourney play must be provided by the teams. The balls must conform to Amateur Softball Association state tournament specifications.

Any legal ASA, NSA or USSSA bat may be used during tourney play.

For further information or to enter the tourney, interested teams can contact John Benton at (812) 877-2566.

• Wolfe’s wins again — In last week’s column, mention was made of the successful season being enjoyed by the Wolfe’s Auto Auction co-ed softball squad. Well, we can add another tourney title to their resume.

Wolfe’s Auto Auction cruised through the Cha Chi Invitational without a blemish on their record. In winning the tourney, Wolfe’s Auto Auction run-ruled second-place finisher Fox’s Meat Market and third-place DLC.

It is anticipated that the Wolfe’s Auto Auction team will be vying for the upcoming Terre Haute city champions co-ed tourney title discussed above.

• Two teams compete at Bloomington — This past weekend the Bloomington Invitational took place as a part of the season-long Dudley Challenge Series, with two local teams participating.

Budweiser, a men’s Class C team, competed in the men’s B/C division and finished with a 2-2 record. Opening tourney play, Budweiser lost to Softball Mafia by an 18-15 score, then earned wins over Team Legends 20-0 and Team Synergy 17-2. The Budweiser squad was eliminated by Last Call (Ohio) by a 17-4 score.

The 2-2 record earned Budweiser a fourth-place finish, and the Budweiser team currently sits atop the MSP Class C Dudley Challenge Series point standings.

Another local participant was the Hi-Comm squad. The Hi-Comm team finished with an 0-2 record during Bloomington Invitational play. Scores were unavailable at press time.

• Chessir fund raiser — Local men and co-ed teams interested in participating in a worthy cause can enter the Shane Chessir fund-raising invitational tournaments. Proceeds from tourney play will be donated to a fund to help Chessir defray medical costs incurred during a recent tournament. Hosted by the Avon softball facility, the tourney is scheduled for play July 10.
