Softball Scene: Hicks, teammates to be inducted in Hall of Fame

By John Benton

TERRE HAUTE — This coming March 21 will find the Indiana Amateur Softball Association holding its annual Hall of Fame banquet at the Terre Haute Holiday Inn. At that time, the late Debbie Hicks and the Terre Haute Cheffettes/Chevettes women’s fastpitch team will be inducted.

Debbie Hicks, who passed away in 2008 after a long bout with cancer, will be inducted for excellence in the fastpitch and slowpitch games.

In 1978, Debbie was part of the Indiana ASA Major state champion Terre Haute Chevettes team. As such, she was the winning pitcher in the state championship game at age 17. In addition to her pitching skills, Debbie was awarded a Gold Glove for her fielding prowess on the ’78 state championship squad.

After concluding her fastpitch career, Debbie took up the slowpitch game and again excelled. In 1985, she was a key player on the Indiana ASA Major state champion Terre Haute Chrysler-Plymouth team, which competed at the highest level of slowpitch for several years.

In addition to playing for the Wabash Valley’s leading women’s slowpitch team, Debbie also played on one of the area’s top coed teams with husband Ron Hicks.

Debbie was the daughter of Bill and Mary Tanner.

On a personal note, I would like to say that I’m proud to be the person who nominated Debbie Hicks for the Indiana ASA Hall of Fame. She is greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Also being inducted into the Indiana ASA Hall of Fame is the Terre Haute Cheffettes/Chevettes team. The Terre Haute-based team won the Indiana ASA Major state title 10 consecutive years from 1966 through 1975. In addition, it won the previously mentioned 1978 state championship.

Several former team members are expected to be in attendance at the Hall of Fame banquet.

Any former Cheffette/Chevette player interested in further information may call Arlene at (812) 299-4662.

Also being inducted in the 2009 class for their individual accomplishments are Mark Cade, Kerry Clevenger, Mike Anderson and Jim Ellis. Being inducted for team excellence are the Anderson Astros, Marion Plymouth Club, the Region Rockers from Schererville and the Evansville Earthquake.

Anyone wishing to attend the festivities can contact Wayne Myers at (812) 234-0339 to make reservations. Price is $25 per adult and $12 for children under 12.
