Softball Scene: Mixed results for local teams at state tournaments

The results from the Amateur Softball Association’s men’s slowpitch Class C and D state tournaments are in, and the results for local teams were mixed.

Two local squads, Clabber Girl in the MSP Class C tourney, and 180 Energy Drink in the MSP Class D tourney, finished well, but the results for other local teams were disappointing.

Most noteworthy was the Clabber Girl effort at Kokomo, where the squad managed to win the state crown with a 5-1 mark. In doing so, Clabber Girl recorded wins over Voodoo 16-8, Miller’s Mining 17-2, Werner-Truesdale 9-5, Prime Time 12-8 and Evansville Hooters 19-11. Its only loss was to the Evansville Hooters by a 13-9 count.

Leading the way offensively was Brad Pierce with a 16-for-23 performance, 8 for 8 in the final two games. Also making outstanding offensive contributions were Clay Huffman, Jason Payton, Rick Robins and Gary Potter.

Outkast also participated in the tournament but was hampered by the loss of several key team members. Finishing with an 0-2 mark, the Outkast team played without two starting outfielders and its designated hitter, all of whom had previous commitments.

Before closing this discussion of the MSP Class C tourney, I might note that any rumors of my ejection from the state title contest are based entirely on fact. I was correctly told to leave the field after vociferously noting shortcomings of game officials. In short, I am guilty as charged.

In the MSP Class D north state tourney in Crawfordsville, the results were disappointing.

The Robinson/Foster Bad Boys recorded the only win for local team efforts while Crawl Works finished with an 0-2 tourney mark. Especially frustrating was the Crawl Works performance; the squad has recorded a number of impressive wins this season and must be sorely disappointed with the outcome.

The MSP Class D south state tournament in Evansville had a better outcome for one local team.
