Softball Scene: Several Wabash Valley softball teams preparing for state-tournament action

The next three weekends should prove interesting for local softball squads as several local teams will be competing for state titles.

Hoping to improve on last year’s second-place finish in the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) women’s class C tournament, the Chop Shop women’s team will be traveling to Kokomo this weekend. Chop Shop’s second-place finish at state earned it a nationals’ berth, and the squad finished fourth.

Playing for the Chop Shop this season will be: Angi King, Cindy Fulk, Connie Bolinger, Tracy Bennett, Lauren Mardis, Stacey Hall, April Moore, Lyndie Alspaugh, Hope Downey, Megan Koers, Kris Dwyer and Annie Marshall.

The Outkast men’s team will also be testing the waters at the state level, competing in Indianapolis in the USSSA Class D State Tournament.

Competing in the Dudley Challenge Series in Topeka, Ind., the PrimeLending/Crawlworks team will be trying to climb from their present second-place standing to earn a first-place finish in this inauguaral season for the challenger series. The PrimeLending/Crawlworks team will be playing Benchwarmers at 8:50 a.m. Saturday. The squad traisl Rockwood/Cutrite and with a good performance in the series finale can catapult into first.

Several more local teams are scheduled to play in upcoming ASA and NSA state tourney play Aug. 1-2 and Aug. 8-9.

The streak is over! The First Financial coed team has fallen from the ranks of the undefeated with a 16-6 thumping at the hands of the RTS/Foster’s Construction team in the Terre Haute Family Y postseason tournament. Undefeated since late in the 2006 season, the First Financial coed squad had won 65 consecutive games in Y leage play until their loss Thursday.

Finishing third in league play behind First Financial and Fox Canteen, the RTS/Foster’s Construction team moved through the postseason tournament in convincing fashion. RTS/Foster’s defeated Ivy Tech No. 2 20-0, Fox Canteen 15-2 and First Financial 16-6.

Playing for the RTS/Foster’s Construction team are: Rodney and Gina Smith, Annie Marshall, Chad Cress, Kevin Wilt, Chris Joslin, Pete Cottom, Mike Walker, Lacey Porter, Brenda Honaker, Terri Nichols, Melanie Moore, Keith Kindberg and Bill Hoggatte.

Both First Financial and RTS/Foster’s plan on playing in the ASA D/E coed state tourney in Crawfordsville the weekend of Sept. 12-13.

In other tournament results from the Terre Haute Family Y league, the Robinson’s Heating and Colling won the postseason men’s tournament with a thrilling 17-16 victory over Matco Tools. Down five runs going into the bottom of the seventh, the Robinson’s squad tallied six to earn the win and the postseason tournament title.

Last week’s column included results from the Effingham ISA qualifier tourney which was won by the local Budweister squad. While the final results were correct, there were some omissions.

Crawlworks’ opening game loss was by a 12-11 score and not 12-1. The team also earned a 24-14 victory over third-place finisher Outkast.

The first annual Outkast Invitational is scheduled for Oct. 3-4. The cost will be $150. Interested parties can contact Todd Heim at (812) 841-6043 for more information. Several quality teams have already committed.
