Softball Scene: Chop Shop squad takes second at ASA Co-ed Novice state finals

By John Benton
The Tribune-Star

This past weekend the Chop Shop co-ed novice team claimed a second place finish in the 26-team ASA Co-ed Novice state finals in Elkhart. After dropping their first game to AAA Auto Shop 17-11, Chop Shop reeled off eight consecutive wins before dropping the state championship game by an 11-9 score to Simeri’s Tap of Mishawaka.

While earning a second-place finish, Chop Shop recorded wins over Teaz 14-7, United 12-11, Wings 10-6, Ace 17-13, Heilman’s 12-11, Rodriguez 13-10, Diamond’s 9-4 and Simeri’s Tap 8-7.

Playing for the Chop Shop team were the following: Bruce and Hope Downey, Darrin and Kim Chaney, Rock Robins, Jeff Long, Anita Cook, Jason Frye, Jason Hinton, Lauren Mardis, Lindy Alspaugh, Amy Clearwaters and Richard King. Angie Robins-King was coach and official scorekeeper.

Several other local squads participated. Listed are the teams and their tourney record: Cooklaw 2-2, Joe Hoops 1-2, Schurick’s Heating 2-2, La Pachanga 0-2, Robin’s Malloy 0-2 and First Financial 0-2.

• Church tourney — The Hulman Street Wesleyan team recently garnered an elusive tourney title when competing in the South district Wesleyan Church softball tourney in Bloomington.

Finishing with a 7-1 record, the Hulman Street Wesleyan team was the first local team to win the tourney title in 15 years. They defeated: Valeene 16-11, Columbus 19-9, Evansville Forest Hills 8-7, Hulman Street Wesleyan No. 2 20-3 and Marengo 20-10. Their only defeat came at the hands of Mitchell 16-4.

Especially noteworthy was the win over Marengo. Needing a victory for the tourney title, Hulman Street Wesleyan fell behind 10-0 in the first inning before earning the 20-10 come-from-behind win.

Hulman Street Wesleyan’s roster is: Dan Willis, Stephen Marshall, Steve Price, Bryan Haney, Jim Edwards, Adam Griner, Jesse Gomolisky, Frank Cuicchi, Terry McCarty, Dusty Speth, Troy Cuthbertson, Matt Guire, Jeremy Guire and Gary Guire.

• Dehart rolls — The Dehart Rental co-ed team marched through the Saline City Labor Day co-ed tourney without a loss. After an opening round 9-4 come-from-behind win over Joe Hoops, the Dehart Rental team run-ruled the next three opponents in winning the tourney. Dehart Rental defeated Chop Shop 14-4 and First Financial 18-8 and 16-6.

Dehart Rental’s roster is: Ryan Aderie, John Aderie, Jenna Aderie, Ashley Koehler, Matt Lash, Laura McCrea, Clay Hullman, David Kingery, Ryan Dehart, Chris Dehart, Casey Schallander, Brittany Brown, Jason Payton and Heather Chaney.

• Rock ’n Jack tourney — Men’s teams interested in local tourney action can register for the first Rock ’n Jack tourney by calling Todd Heim at (812) 235-6500. Tourney action is scheduled for Sept. 22-23 at Spencer Field in Terre Haute. All tourney proceeds will benefit the Catholic Charities of Terre Haute.
