Wabash Valley softball teams make noise at Kokomo tournaments

By John Benton
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Wabash Valley softballers are hoping that the Indiana Amateur Softball Association will be scheduling more tourney play in Kokomo in the near future. In addition to the Clabber Girl MSP Class “C” earned earlier this summer in Kokomo, area co-ed teams returned from Kokomo with a first, second and fourth-place finish in a 31-team tourney.

Chop Shop emerged from the losers’ bracket to defeat Terre Haute First Financial twice to win the Indiana ASA Coed Novice state crown. In doing so, Chop Shop recorded wins over Diamonds 10-4, DHI 15-4, Cottonwood Corner 16-14, Heilmann’s 7-2 and TH First Financial 12-8 and 16-4. Chop Shop was dropped into the losers’ bracket following an 11-1 loss to TH First Financial.

Playing for the Chop Shop team were the following players: Angi Robins-King, Richard King, Darren Chaney, Kim Chaney, Rick Robins, Hope Downey, Bruce Downey, Megan Koers, Jeff Long, Jason Long, Gary Potter, Cathy Alspaugh, Lindy Alspaugh, Jason Hinton and Cindy Fulk.

In addition, Cottonwood Corner from Brazil took home a fourth-place finish.

Several other local teams participated in the state finals. Unfortunately, the final results are unavailable at this time.

Congrats to all the local coed squads for their great showing.

Another local team was making their mark recently when the Chop Shop women’s team competed in the ASA WSP Class “D” National Tournament in Orlando, Fla.

The Chop Shop team opened tourney play with a 12-9 loss to Diehard, then reeled off wins over The Guzzlers 10-0, Wild One 14-6 and Twisted 14-13 before being eliminated with a 13-11 loss to the Lady Sharks. Chop Shop’s 3-2 record was good enough for seventh place in the 21-team affair.

Good job to the Chop Shop women’s team.

• Results in —Results are in from the Saline City Labor Day festivities.

The tourney crown in the coed division was won by Julie May’s Lakers with a 14-12 win over Fast Track Apparel. The third-place finisher was Thatcher Trucking.

In the newly added men’s division, Koehler Farms finished first with a perfect 4-0 mark. The highlight of the men’s division play a 37-21 bombfest between Koehler Farms and Sinclair Construction, the second-place finisher.

As usual, tourney play in the Saline City event was marked by great crowd support.

• Fire Dept. wins — Fresh off their trashing of the Terre Haute Police Department, the Terre Haute Fire Department earned a tourney title in the Battle of the Badges tourney hosed in Avon. The Terre Haute squad defeated several Indiana police and fire departments teams to “cop” the traveling tourney trophy.

Leading the way for the Terre Haute team was Kevin Kull with four home runs and Bill Berry with one home run.

• World Series — In tourney play this weekend, Clabber Girl and Dehart’s Rental will be traveling to Owensboro, Ky. to play in the 43-team NSA Class “C” World Series. The tourney field includes teams from Kansas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. Both local teams earned the right to play through earlier NSA tourney play.
