Softball Scene: Tough week for Valley teams in tournament play

TERRE HAUTE — The past two weekends have been especially tough for Wabash Valley teams participating in ASA state tournaments.

Of the nine teams entered in three different state tournaments, only one managed a .500 record.

In the ASA men’s fastpitch Class C state tournament July 28-29 at Elkhart, the Elkins Brothers Tree Service team finished with a 0-2 mark. It dropped its opening-round game to Kokomo CFD by a 4-1 count and followed that with a 7-0 loss to Wabash.

Last weekend didn’t prove much more successful for local squads as five teams traveled to Avon for the ASA men’s slowpitch Class D south state tournament and three ventured to Evansville for the ASA men’s slowpitch Class C state finals.

At Avon, all five locals squads ended up with identical 1-2 records. Terre Haute Rx Shop, River Bats, Maurizio’s Pizza, Matco Tools/Chop Shop and Robinson Heating and Cooling settled for an eighth-place tie among the 20 participants. Stafford Realty of Bloomington won the title with a 5-0 mark.

Ballyhoo Tavern, competing at Evansville, managed the only .500 mark for Terre Haute area teams by finishing 2-2. Unfortunately for Ballyhoo, its opening game was against eventual undefeated winner C&C Construction. Following the opening 11-2 loss. Ballyhoo reeled off wins in the losers’ bracket over R&G Construction (8-7) and Scores (14-12). Ballyhoo was eliminated in another close contest by Dirty Dawgs 15-14.

Other Class C participants, Clabber Girl and Matco Tools, went 1-2 and 0-2 respectively.

The results mentioned above were certainly a disappointment for several teams which anticipated making a much better showing in ASA state tournament play.
