Softball Scene: Valley teams focusing on key upcoming weekends

By John Benton
Special to the Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE For many adult men’s slowpitch teams, the weekends of Aug. 2-3 and Aug. 9-10 have been highlighted on their calendars since the season’s start.

This weekend finds the Amateur Softball Association holding its men’s Class B, C and D state tournaments. Next weekend, the National Softball Association will conduct its B, C and D tournaments. Several local men’s teams are slated to play in both organizations’ state tournament action.

The ASA MSP Class C state tournament this weekend is being hosted by Kokomo and has 20 participants. Clabber Girl is scheduled to play Voodoo, while Outkast will play Prime Time.

Five local teams will be participating in the MSP Class D division — 180 Energy Drink, GarageMasters Construction and TH Rx Shoppe/Shuee & Sons will travel to Evansville for the 20-team ASA Class D southern state, while Crawl Works and Robinson/Foster Bad Boyz will head to Crawfordsville for the Class D northern state.

Good luck in all your efforts to bring home some hardware.

• Rock’n’Jock — The second annual Rock’n’Jock tourney played at the Spencer Field facility this past weekend was won by Clabber Girl. In doing so, Clabber Girl defeated Outkast 23-3, Wittmer Brothers 15-2, Lewis Rentals 22-14 and DeHart’s Rentals 18-8. Leading the Clabber Girl team offensively was former Indiana State baseballer Brad Pierce with a 12-for-14, two-homer performance. Other offensive leaders for Clabber Girl were Lenny Leclercq, 11 for 15 with seven homers; Ryan Nicholson, 9 for 12 and four homers; and Ryan Carter with an 8-for-12, one-homer effort.

Finishing second was Outkast with a 3-1 tourney mark.

The Rock’n’Jock tourney at times looked like an old-school gathering for former Clinton adult league players. “Easy” Ed Clow, “Mr. Bad Memory” Donnie Miller and Don Hall were all on hand during tourney play.

Miller and Clow, in combination with Chris Patterson and myself, made possible the swapping of several exaggerated tales of the good old days (or was it “daze”?).

• Bedford news — Two local men’s teams, Crawl Works and 180 Energy Drink, traveled to Bedford for an all-nighter tourney this past weekend. 180 Energy Drink earned a third-place finish in the 20-team affair, while Crawl Works finished with a 2-2 mark.

The 180 Energy Drink squad seems to be coming together at just the right time. While playing in the Bedford tourney the 180 Energy Drink team compiled a 6-2 record. Team manager Greg Landry hoped its season-best showing is an indication of things to come as it traveled to Evansville for the ASA Class D tourney this weekend.

Composed of Sullivan and Greene County players, the team travels to Terre Haute to participate in the Tuesday night Terre Haute Park and Recreation League. As a result of the travel and gas prices, the 180 Energy Drink team often has trouble getting all its starters together for league play. Playing for 180 Energy Drink this season are the following players: Travis David, Derrick McKee, Chad Crynes, Brian Barber, Adam Pierson, Josh McDaniels, Jeremy Stone, Jeremy Hughett, Tim Wright, Ryan Hester, Chris Faust, Drew Landry, Greg Landry and Ryan Smith.
