Softball Scene: Chop Shop women’s team dices up softball competition

Let’s hope the performance by the Chop Shop women’s team this past weekend is an omen for local softball teams.

The Chop Shop squad finished second in the Amateur Softball Association Women’s Slowpitch Class C state finals hosted by the Avon softball complex. In doing so, the Chop Shop recorded wins over Swartz 5-2 and Horton’s 9-8. Their losses were to a powerful DDI squad by 15-9 and 13-11 scores.

Playing for Chop Shop are the following: Hope Downey, Angi Robins-King, Lindy Alspaugh, Nicole Ferguson, Kim Chaney, Kayla Raderstorf, Lacey Brown, Cindy Fulk, Megan Koers, Laura Mardis, Angi O’Bryan and Tracy Bennett.

For three of the Chop Shop players, the Labor Day national tourney will be their second summer softball trip to Florida. Downey, Robins-King and Chaney will be playing in the WSP 35-and-over national tourney the weekend of Aug. 8-10 at Ft. Myers, Fla. As they did last year, they will be playing for the Kimball International team out of Jasper.

Congrats and good luck to all the Chop Shop women in their future softball endeavors. Let’s hope the men’s teams can equal your success on the statewide level.

• Tournament updates — A number of local men’s slowpitch teams have been active in tourney play recently.

DeHart’s Rentals, one of the most active local teams when it comes to tourney play, participated in the Q-95 all-nighter at Indianapolis. In doing so, the DeHart’s team recorded a 4-2 mark in an especially strong tourney field.

Opening with two victories in the round-robin portion of tourney play, DeHart’s recorded resounding wins over Floors Unlimited 19-8 and Primetime 15-0. In the double-elimination tourney that followed, DeHart’s finished with a 2-2 record, defeating C&B 20-2 and Floors Unlimited 20-14 while losing to P7A Street Kids 18-17 and Badgers 24-23. Leading the way for DeHart’s Rentals during tourney action were Ryan and Chris DeHart.

The Outkast men’s team traveled to Bedford to play in the Josh Terry Memorial tourney. Outkast opened tourney play with a 16-3 win over Stafford before falling to Nolan’s 19-18 and Hall’s Produce 22-12. The Outkast defeats came at the hands of the first- and second-place finishers in the 22-team affair.

Terre Haute Rx Shop won an Avon round-robin tourney and qualified for the season-ending tourney of champions in late September. The Terre Haute Rx Shop recorded wins over Crawl Works 15-7 and 18-15 and well as Beer Magic 16-7.

Playing for the Terre Haute Rx Shop were Matt Cash, Levi Sinclair, Kyle Seeny, Ryan Hayes, Tyler “Mr. Serious” Akers, Matt Brand, Tim Wilson, Joe Harbrueger and Eric Trusler.

• Question — What’s up with the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation adult softball program? Are there changes planned? Are they offering a fall league program?

A recent coaches’ meeting at Torner Center indicated a continuing interest in adult softball, but many wonder in what direction the program is heading. I hope to devote column space to this issue before season’s end.
