Metro sports: Rose-Hulman picks up baseball win

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A late run in the eighth-inning broke a 4-all tie and proved to be the game winner for Rockford College in a 5-4 decision over the Rose-Hulman baseball team Friday at the Chain of Lakes Complex.

After falling behind 3-1, Rose-Hulman (2-3) used a three-run sixth-inning to take a short-lived 4-3 lead. Andrew Benitez, Donnie Waters, and Josh Hoeing hit three straight singles in the inning, followed by a Kody Alayon single to right centerfield that plated two runs.

Basketball

• Woods freshman named All-American — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods freshman Ja’Breena Gardner was named to the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association’s All-American second team for Division I women’s basketball.

The USCAA honors 10 first-team, 10 second-team and 10 honorable-mention student-athletes in each of its two divisions in women’s basketball.

In the 2013-14 season, Gardner topped the USCAA Division I in steals with 4.4 per game while averaging 22.9 minutes played. In 24 games, she led the Pomeroys in total points scored (345), points per game (14.4), assists (62), and steals (106). Her 106 steals broke the single-season school record.

“I believe this year was just a sample of what Ja’Breena is truly capable of,” SMWC coach Deanna Bradley said. “This is an amazing honor for her, especially as a freshman, and one I know she is very humbled to receive. We are all so very proud of her.”

USCAA All-Academic awards also were announced this week. Woods senior Hailee Rittinger and sophomore Mikayla Metheny were among those student-athletes named to the academic list. Rittinger earned the honor for the second straight year, while Metheny added her name to the list for the first time in her career.

Softball

• ISU wins two — The Indiana State softball team (9-5) got off to a hot start in the USF-Under Armour Showcase, as they dominated their first two games of the weekend with a 10-1 win over Quinnipiac and 7-1 over Villanova.

“It's good to beat a team from the Big East, there is no doubt about that,” head coach Shane Bouman said. “The pitchers threw well, we played good defense, got some key hits, ran the bases aggressively, and thats what we like to do and had a good outcome today.”

Against Quinnipiac, junior pitcher Yvette Alvarez pitched a complete game, allowing just three hits and one run.

Just as they have in the previous nine games, the Indiana State softball team scored first in the top of the first inning against Villanova and never looked back, behind a solid pitching effort from sophomore Taylor Lockwood.

Lockwood retired the first 10 batters she faced, in order, carrying a perfect game into the bottom of the fourth before allowing a bunt single.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Sycamores tacked on two more runs to extend their lead to 7-1 over the Wildcats.

With two outs in the bottom of the 7th, Villanova collected a solo home run and single before a groundout ended the game to give the Sycamores their second win of the day.

On the day, the Sycamores stole 14 bases and allowed just six hits.  The Sycamores will return to action Saturday when they take on St. John's at 11:15 a.m.

  • SPT 050113 ROSSELLI HIT.jpg Secret weapon: Kelsey Rosselli finishing Woods career with a bang

At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, reporting game results to the Tribune-Star after a win or a loss is not always a high priority.
So when one of its athletes enjoys an outstanding season, like senior Kelsey Rosselli is doing for the Pomeroys’ softball team in 2013, media publicity doesn’t always follow.
In fact, her efforts almost seem like a government secret.
Rosselli’s name might sound familiar to longtime Terre Haute softball followers because she was a standout for North High School, from where she graduated in 2009.
Since then, she’s helped The Woods finish runner-up in three straight U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournaments in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
