Despite firing off 36 shots, Rose-Hulman and Woods soccer teams battle to 0-0 tie

TERRE HAUTE — There was good reason to believe the Rose-Hulman and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods women’s soccer teams were an even match before they took the field Tuesday afternoon.

The Engineers entered at 4-2-3 and the host Pomeroys were 3-3.

Well, after 110 minutes — 90 minutes of regulation play and two 10-minute overtimes — proof exists that the teams are truly equal.

They played to a scoreless tie.

“We battled. The girls gave it everything they had and we ended up with 11 players and I had to play [all 11],” Rose coach Amy Helliwell said.

“Clearly we were getting enough possessions and enough attacking. We felt like we could win it, so obviously we’re disappointed. But it’s a good team we’re playing against. It was a good match. Everyone played well in this match. It was a beautiful thing to see,” Woods coach Mike Aycock said.

The Engineers outshot the Pomeroys 20-16 for the game, keeping both goalies busy. The Engineers’ Lucinda Combs made nine saves and the Pomeroys’ Georgie Macy 13.

Rose-Hulman played most of the contest without leading scorer Nicky Wheeler. After a scoreless first half and 25 minutes into the second, Wheeler — who has nine goals for the season — entered the game. She led the Engineers with five shots.

“She said she wanted to give it a go. I think she helped create some opportunities and just couldn’t get it to fall [in the net],” Helliwell noted.

The Woods took 12 of its 16 shots in the second half.

“I thought Saint Mary was the better team [in] the second half. They were just beating us to everything. They wanted this game. They wanted it more than we did,” Helliwell said.

With 23 minutes to play in the second half, Rose’s Mallory McDevitt kicked a hard, curving shot at the middle of the net. But  it never touched string because Macy grabbed it.

The Woods’ Samantha Morrison got off a good shot on the back side of the Rose-Hulman defense. But just as it reached the high corner, Combs got a couple of fingers on the ball.

The Pomeroys got two good looks at the goal on the back side of the Rose defense in the second half, but Combs made the saves. The Pomeroys didn’t attempt a shot at the weak side again.

“That weak-side runner was open on those two [attacks] and that weak-side runner wasn’t there at other times. I give my girls credit, they made pretty good choices in terms of what was on and what wasn’t on,” Aycock said.

In the first overtime, the Engineers outshot the Pomeroys 2-0 and in the second overtime the host team had a 2-1 shot advantage.

At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, reporting game results to the Tribune-Star after a win or a loss is not always a high priority.
So when one of its athletes enjoys an outstanding season, like senior Kelsey Rosselli is doing for the Pomeroys’ softball team in 2013, media publicity doesn’t always follow.
In fact, her efforts almost seem like a government secret.
Rosselli’s name might sound familiar to longtime Terre Haute softball followers because she was a standout for North High School, from where she graduated in 2009.
Since then, she’s helped The Woods finish runner-up in three straight U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournaments in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
