The Woods splits two with Marian College

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS — Ashley Loomis belted two solo home runs in the first game Tuesday, but they weren’t enough to prevent a 3-2 St. Mary-of-the-Woods loss to visiting Marian College.

Her 12-strikeout pitching performance in the second game was good enough, however, to give the host Pomeroys a 3-1 triumph to salvage a split of the softball doubleheader.

Loomis’ roundtrippers came in the fourth and sixth innings off Game One winning pitcher Stephanie Westberry, with the first traveling to deep right-center field and the second caroming off the left-field scoreboard.

Loomis described the pitch on her first homer as “a flat riseball high and outside.”

“It looked really fat,” she added.

Her second blast came on an inside pitch.

“She tried to jam me,” Loomis said, “but I got my hands through.”

Unfortunately for coach Gary Rodgers’ Pomeroys, they couldn’t muster any more runs until the second inning of the second game.

Down 1-0 with one out, Lindsey McNulty singled. One out later, Kea Silcock walked. The next batter, Stacy Kutcher, ripped a two-out single to left to plate McNulty.

A wild pitch by Marian starter Sandy Corum moved Silcock and Kutcher up one base. Then a bobble on an infield grounder hit by Allison Tomey enabled Silcock to touch home, putting the Pomeroys ahead 2-1.

The Woods increased its margin to 3-1 with one more run in the fourth. Silcock led off with another walk — she drew the only two bases on balls for her team in the second game — and she advanced to second on Kutcher’s sacrifice bunt. One out later, Erica Ketner blooped an RBI single into shallow right.

Loomis dug herself into a little bit of a hole in the sixth inning, hitting one batter with a pitch and walking another. But after a sac bunt, she struck out the last two batters.

At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, reporting game results to the Tribune-Star after a win or a loss is not always a high priority.
So when one of its athletes enjoys an outstanding season, like senior Kelsey Rosselli is doing for the Pomeroys’ softball team in 2013, media publicity doesn’t always follow.
In fact, her efforts almost seem like a government secret.
Rosselli’s name might sound familiar to longtime Terre Haute softball followers because she was a standout for North High School, from where she graduated in 2009.
Since then, she’s helped The Woods finish runner-up in three straight U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournaments in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
