Rose downs The Woods 6-0 on soccer field

Engineer Liz Ridgway ties own school record, scores four goals

TERRE HAUTE Rose-Hulman and Liz Ridgway proved too much for St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Wednesday, the Engineers prevailing with a 6-0 women’s college soccer victory at the Rose-Hulman intramural field.

Ridgway tied her own school record, matching the four goals she scored last week against Earlham.

The two-time all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference pick said it’s always a team effort, but the senior has scored a goal in each of Rose-Hulman’s six matches. “It helps a lot when I have other people giving it right to me,” Ridgway said. “In the other game against Earlham, twice I got it off my head. When Annmarie Stanley [who had three assists against Earlham] gives me perfect balls — heavens part, angels sing — it makes it easy.”

Molly Richardson set up Ridgway with a perfect cross — absent the angels — to open the Rose-Hulman scoring.

Nine minutes, 44 seconds into the match, Richardson found Ridgway, who added a goal on a free kick just three minutes later.

Richardson added the Engineers’ third goal 35:46 into the match. on a pass from Kendra Albers.

Ridgway found the backpost about six minutes later from about 40 yards out, and Jen Lyman set her up for her final goal. Albers added Rose-Hulman’s sixth goal early in the second half.

St. Mary-of-the-Woods dictated much of the action from that point. The young Pomeroys’ team was playing its second match of the season and it showed.

SMWC fell behind 5-0 at halftime, but responded with a more sound second half.

The Pomeroys, featuring former Wabash Valley prep standouts such as Erin Pugh and Lauren Sullivan of Terre Haute North and Briauna Davis of Sullivan, had several scoring chances in the second half.

“We’re still not as intense as we need to be in the first half,” coach Mike Aycock said. “And so when we closed up, and we were confident to pass the ball, put a body on when we needed to, possess the ball a little bit, things went much better. We’ll do better as the year goes on.”

Rose-Hulman hopes to build toward its HCAC title defense, which begins Sept. 20 against Transylvania. The Engineers lost six starters from last year’s team.

“We don’t quite have the numbers we’ve had in the past, but the girls are working hard and things are looking better each day,” coach Emily Hakeman said. “The match gave us a chance to work on possessing the ball, moving it quicker, which is something we’ve been struggling with a little bit this year.”

SMWC 0 0 — 0

Rose-Hulman 5 1 — 6

R-H goals — Ridgway (Richardson); Ridgway; Richardson (Kendra Albers); Ridgway (Jen Lyman); Albers (Carolyn Guzik).

Next — Rose-Hulman (4-2) plays Sunday at Millikin. St. Mary-of-the-Woods falls to 0-2.
