Metro Sports: North grad Rosselli signs with the Woods

By David Hughes
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Danielle Rosselli, a 2008 graduate of Terre Haute North High School, is the first student-athlete to sign with the new women’s golf team at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.

She signed her national letter-of-intent Thursday.

Woods golf coach Steve Higham said he’s excited to have Rosselli as the first official member of the team.

“She’s not just a fine golfer, but she’s also a fine young lady,” he said. “She’ll be a very good representative for St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. We’re starting the team with a high standard and we’ll have to match that with our future recruits.”

A four-year varsity golfer at North, Rosselli said she’s been playing the sport since she was a youngster. In addition to being a member of the Patriots’ girls golf team, she was a member of the dance team, Interact, DECA and Youth Leadership. She also was elected homecoming queen, and she has volunteered with a number of organizations in the community, including Happiness Bag and the Light House Mission.

The daughter of Jeff and Terri Rosselli, Danielle Rosselli plans to major in psychology at The Woods. She said she’s excited about playing golf at The Woods with her old coach serving as her new coach.

“Honestly, it was a last-minute decision,” Rosselli insisted. “I played for [coach Higham] in high school, and when he called me, I thought it would be a great opportunity. I’m really excited and honored to come out to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College to play for its golf program.”

Deanna Bradley, athletic director at SMWC, said that while the college is recruiting for the new golf team, a full team and schedule are not expected to be in place until fall 2009. Students who are recruited for the golf program will spend the 2008 season playing in invitational tournaments and practicing on challenging courses to prepare for the 2009 season.
