Caravan’s stop a proud moment

On June 8, 2006, Terre Haute really glistened. The Tin Can Tourists caravan traveled through Terre Haute and “camped” in Deming Park. They were traveling the Historic National Road from Maryland to Illinois to celebrate the 200th Birthday of the nation’s first interstate highway (U.S. 40).

It was a privilege to see these vintage recreational vehicles and all the care given them. Everyone in the caravan that we talked with were impressed with their reception and the pristine condition of Deming Park and its facilities.

People thanked the participants for stopping in Terre Haute and sharing their journey with the residents. As a spectator I was proud of Terre Haute and its people.

Many thanks are due to the following people for their work in making the event happen: Terre Haute Park Department staff and Greg Ruark for the pristine setting for the open house; Indiana National Road Association and Trish Eccles for bringing Tin Can Tourists to Indiana; Wetnight RV for the Thursday evening dinner; Clabber Girl for the Friday morning continental breakfast and tour of the museum; Terre Haute Police Department for escort and protection; Terre Haute CVB and Columbian Home Products for their support.

Tasty fund-raiser for Humane Society

The Terre Haute Humane Society is thrilled with the wonderful fund-raiser held for us by Bowers at 7th and 70 Liquors at the Ohio Building in Terre Haute.

Only a few months ago the Terre Haute Humane Society was contacted by Leslie and Patrick Ballard asking if the Humane Society would be interested in allowing Paula and Wayne Bower of 7th and 70 Liquors to hold a wine-tasting event in support of the Terre Haute Humane Society.

Not knowing what to expect, we said yes, as this was something new and sounded like a fun event. Suddenly we were in a whirlwind of activity getting ready for an event that we had absolutely no experience with.

Thankfully Paula and Wayne were professionals and had everything under control. Several restaurants were contacted to see if they would be interested in supplying appetizers. Cucina Maria’s, bradenelli’s and European Grill all jumped at the chance to support the Humane Society.

Al Ruckreigel and Dave Adams of the Ohio Building provided the location, local liquor distributors provided the wonderful wine and the event was on. The decorations were provided by Simple to Elegant and The Station Floral and Hair design assisted in promotion and ticket sales. Many other people provided items to help raise money to support the Humane Society. Black Taj at Honey Creek Mall, Kadel’s and Wooden Key Hallmark stores, B&B foods, Junior Achievement, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and many other individuals provided items for our silent auction and raffle.

Several animals also attended the event, and although none were adopted at the event, we hope that there will be someone special to come and take one of these wonderful animals home.

We want to thank everyone involved in organizing and producing this event. It was a great time for a great cause.
