Metro Roundup: ISU baseball sweeps Racers

Murray, Ky. — Indiana State recorded its first three-game sweep of the 2007 college baseball season on Sunday, beating host Murray State 12-4.

Now 8-7 for the year, the Sycamores had 37 runs and 44 hits in the three games against the 3-14 Thoroughbreds.

ISU took the lead for good with four runs in the top of the fourth. Brett Siegmund led off with a double and scored on a single by Casey Martin, Martin stole second and scored on a hit by Dave Brumagin, Nick Ciolli reached on a fielder’s choice and came around on an error, a stolen base and Ryan Bond’s infield hit, and Bond scored following a single by Sean Osborne and a bunt by Ryan Strausborger.

An error, a wild pitch and an RBI single by Osborne made it 5-0 before Murray State rallied for three runs, but Adam Lindsay came on in relief to stop a seventh-inning rally and the Sycamores got seven more runs in the top of the ninth.

Skyler Pearson started the game and performed well, pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing just a pair of hits and one run to earn his first career victory.

Offensively, ISU was paced by Brumagin, who was 4 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored. Bond record three hits with a pair of RBI and three runs scored, Ciolli drove in two runs and Osborne was 2 for 2.

Indiana State plays Tuesday at Miami of Ohio, then begins Missouri Valley Conference play at Wichita State next weekend.



In other baseball news:

• Engineers fall short — At Art Nehf Field, Rose-Hulman rallied from a 7-3 deficit Sunday with three runs in the eighth inning but lost 8-6 to Edgewood College in the final game of the Engineer Invitational.

Mount Union also defeated Rose-Hulman 14-2 in Sunday’s first game.

John Nash had two doubles and Kirk Thompson had a double and scored a run for Rose-Hulman against Mount Union.

Rose’s Derek Eitel and Cody Flynn of Edgewood had a seven-inning pitchers’ duel in the nightcap, but Edgewood scored five times in the top of the eighth inning.

Cory McCullick of Edgewood, who hit a bases-loaded triple in the eighth-inning rally, had a diving catch in the ninth inning to thwart a potential winning rally for the Engineers.

Matt Pepelea had four hits and two RBI, Thompson had a pinch-hit RBI single and Nash had two spectacular fielding plays for the home team.

Rose finished 1-3 in the tournament, while Edgewood was 2-0, Mount Union 2-2 and Concordia (Ill.) 1-1.

Now 6-6 for the year, the Engineers play a three-game conference series at Hanover next weekend.

• Rosselli helps Blazers — At Vincennes, Ind., Vincennes University team dropped a doubleheader to Harper College on Saturday afternoon in their opening home games of the season.

Freshman John Rosselli, a graduate of Terre Haute North, was 2 for 4 in the first game.

• Martinsville loses in debut — At Martinsville, Ill., Martinsville dropped its season opener to Windsor 5-4 on Saturday.

Nate Tingley led the Bluestreaks by driving in two runs, while Ethan Bown and Bobby Short each had a double and RBI.

Martinsville will host North Clay on Tuesday.

• Marshall splits twinbill — At Georgetown, Ill., Marshall split a doubleheader with Georgetown in a pair of one-side games. The visiting Lions won the first game 13-2, with Georgetown winning the second game 12-2.

Tennis

• Rose women win — At Renssalaer, Rose-Hulman’s women’s team improved to 13-6 by beating St. Joseph’s 6-3 on Sunday.

Sam Danesis and Maritza Gonzalez were winners in both singles and doubles for the Engineers, who play at Earlham on March 31.

• Engineer men fall — At Rose-Hulman, St. Francis defeated Rose-Hulman 8-1 in a non-conference men’s match on Sunday at the Joy Hulbert Tennis Center.

Michael Schoumacher scored the lone point for the Engineers, winning a third-set tiebreaker at No. 6 singles by a 14-12 score.

Now 3-5, the Rose-Hulman men are at the Kerry Seward Invitational at Wabash next weekend.

• Blank chosen — Nate Blank has been invited to a tryout for the Indiana All-Star basketball team.

The Terre Haute North senior is one of 50 players invited to The Indianapolis Star All-Star Boys Tryout on Sunday at Ben Davis High School.

Others invited are Indiana State recruits Aaron Carter of Perry Central and John Ashworth of Franklin Central and Jake Kelly of Carmel. Kelly began his high school career at Marshall (Ill.).



Golf

• Sherertz helps Hilltoppers — At Princeville, Hawaii, former Terre Haute North golfer Matt Sherertz shot rounds of 77, 80 and 75 for a 232 score as Western Kentucky placed fourth among nine teams at the Kauai Collegiate Cup tournament.
