St. Mary-of-the-Woods commemorates Constitution Day/week

Sen. Robert Byrd said this regarding the importance of the United States Constitution: “Our ideals of freedom, set forth and realized in our Constitution, are our greatest export to the world.”

Byrd passed a bill in 2004 designating Sept. 17 as Constitution Day. This day of national observance commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. Additionally, the observance provides an opportunity to learn more about the founding document.

St. Mary-of-the-Woods College is marking this historical occasion with Constitution Week. This week information about the Constitution will be distributed to the campus community to test its knowledge. The most knowledgeable students will receive special recognition. The celebration will culminate with a presentation by Ron Moore on the Electoral College on Friday in the Providence Center conference room at noon.

Moore, an SMWC adjunct instructor, currently teaches the history/government course on presidential elections. Moore holds degrees in economics and sociology and a graduate degree in public administration from the University of Colorado. He also holds a master’s degree in national security studies from the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. He served for 24 years in the United States Department of Defense, including assignments in various positions in the Pentagon, at the Air Force headquarters in Europe and in the executive office of the president of the United States.
