TERRE HAUTE —
The Wabash Valley will again be well represented at the Indiana MATHCOUNTS competition, with 18 local middle school students taking their problem-solving skills to Purdue University on Saturday.
One four-member team and six other students from Honey Creek Middle School qualified after posting 10 of the top 11 scores in regional competition last month at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Joining them will be teams from Otter Creek Middle School and a local Christian education organization.
MATHCOUNTS is one of the nation’s largest and most successful education partnerships that increases academic and professional opportunities for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students. Each student participated in three rounds of competition: Sprint, testing quickness to solve problems; Target, testing problem-solving skills; and Team, testing teamwork abilities.
Honey Creek won the regional title for the 17th straight year. It took three tiebreaker scores to determine seventh grader Anthony Weng as the top individual problem solver, over second-place classmate John Dalloul. Rounding out the team were eighth grader Amit Chakrabarti in third place and seventh grader Patrick Mercho in fourth.
Other students from Honey Creek advancing to the state finals are eighth graders JJ Faught, Chaman Kumar, Julie Lee, Rishi Patel, Jeremy Rusk and Tony Smodilla. The team members and individual qualifiers are coached by math teacher Bob Fischer.
Otter Creek’s second-place team includes seventh grader Steven Bagley and eighth-grade students Daisey Bell, Meagan Hettinger and Josie Furr. The team is coached by math teacher Chris Stanisz and parent Elizabeth Hettinger.
A team from the Terre Haute Christian Educators group, coached by parent Matt Boutell, finished third in its first year. Members are eighth grader Jonathan Boutell, who placed 10th among regional competitors; sixth graders Caleb Boutell and Cameron Farrell; and eighth grader Ethan Beachy.
Other schools participating in the Wabash Valley regional were Greencastle Middle School, Sarah Scott Middle School, West Vigo Middle School and Woodrow Wilson Middle School.
