The Riverton Parke English academic bowl team finished as runner-up at the state finals competition on May 4 at Purdue University, and the social studies team swept through all of its last eight questions without a miss to finish third in the contest.
The RPHS science team also competed, the first time three teams from RPHS have been in the state finals in the same year. Riverton Parke competed as a Class 4 school.
The English team, coached by Mike Lunsford, placed second behind North White High School. The team consisted of seniors Kevin Dalia, Page Fetter and Emily Peterson, and juniors Savannah Arnold and Mickey Reeves.
“We had a great year,” Lunsford said, “I know it was frustrating to come within a point of winning, but we should be very proud of what we accomplished this year.”
The social studies team, coached by Michael Butler, placed behind Lafayette Central Catholic and Turkey Run, to claim third place.
Team members were seniors Kevin Dalia, Heath Rohr and Quinten Carter. “
I was happy that our kids managed to come back at the end,” Butler said. “They have proven that hard work always pays off.”
The science team also qualified for the state finals round by winning the district contest at Greencastle in April; it placed sixth in the finals. Team members were seniors Carter, Rohr and Tyler Crumrin.
