Rose-Hulman: 15 years in the lead

Annual survey places institute No. 1 again in training future engineers

TERRE HAUTE — For the 15th consecutive year, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has been ranked the nation’s top undergraduate engineering college. The rankings are determined through an annual survey of America’s engineering deans and senior faculty members conducted by U.S. News & World Report for its 2014 college guidebook.

In addition to being rated first among colleges that offer the bachelor’s or master’s as its top degree in engineering, Rose-Hulman is ranked No. 1 by U.S. News in individual programs including: chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. The list includes elite institutions in California, Boston and the nation’s military academies.

“It’s certainly another red-letter day in our grand history at Rose-Hulman,” President James C. Conwell said in an RHIT news release.

“Yet delivering the highest-quality engineering education is our definition of daily life on our campus,” said Conwell, who joined Rose-Hulman in May 2013 as its new president. “Every day, I learn something new here that confirms Rose-Hulman is indeed a place that transforms the lives of the best and the brightest students. It’s no surprise to me that Rose-Hulman continues to be viewed at the pinnacle of engineering education by our peers.”

This year’s U.S. News & World Report rankings join The Princeton Review’s 2014 Best 378 Colleges and the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2014 in recognizing Rose-Hulman’s leadership role in undergraduate engineering, science and mathematics education.

Rose-Hulman is also ranked No. 9 among the top 20 “smartest colleges” in America and No. 1 in student memory by Lumosity.

Rose-Hulman’s Class of 2013 has a 96.5-percent career placement rate with an average starting salary of $65,800. In the past year, Rose-Hulman students have earned Goldwater, Fulbright and Whitaker honors. Student teams also have competed in international and national computer programming and cyber defense challenges. Looking forward, Rose-Hulman recently welcomed the most diverse freshman class in its history and received a record number of applications from prospective students.

“While many know us for our No. 1 ranking, it’s our remarkable career placement rate of nearly 97 percent of our 2013 graduates I want everyone to remember,” Conwell said in the press release. “Our best days are ahead of us. We have completed an extensive strategic planning process that has established six goals for our future: supporting excellence in teaching and innovation; creating stronger lifelong ties with our constituents; becoming more globally connected; addressing affordability; increasing global name recognition; and providing our students with a vision of their impact on the world.

“Being No. 1 for 15 consecutive years is an honor that we are proud to share with students, faculty, staff, alumni and our Terre Haute community,” Conwell said.

The 2014 U.S. News & World Report college guidebook will be available on newsstands throughout the country on Sept. 24. The rankings can also be found at www.usnews.com/colleges.

  • BRUCE'S HISTORY LESSONS: The cagey, but never caged, White Mouse

Few have lived a life as meaningful or full as did Nancy Wake. While she lived in France in 1940 when Nazi Germany subjugated that country, she became a leader of the “maquis” groups — the French resistance fighters — who sabotaged the Nazi occupation of France at every opportunity. Wake was so good at her job, and so good at escaping capture, that the Gestapo nicknamed her “The White Mouse” because she avoided every trap.

In the summer of 1917, Great Britain’s King George V had something of a public relations problem.
