TERRE HAUTE —
Eleven soloists from Terre Haute North Vigo High School band have advanced to the Indiana State School Music Association competition on Saturday at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
Ninety percent of the North band students performed in the ISSMA District Solo and Ensemble Contest, an event where students perform as soloists or in small groups for a judge. Fifty-two of North’s groups (mostly soloists) received a gold rating.
Other accomplishments include:
n The Indoor Percussion Ensemble competed at its first Indiana Percussion Association competition recently and received fourth place out of 24 competing units in their class.
n The North Varsity and JV guards have competed at three competitions thus far in the Indiana High School Color Guard Association and have placed sixth or higher at each competition, competing against more than 20 units at each event.
n The jazz ensembles at North have performed at the Bloomington Jazz Fest and the Purdue University Jazz Fest where sophomore Aaron Mutchler and freshman Cindy Jiang were awarded Outstanding Soloists.
n In January, nine North band students were selected to perform in the Indiana State University All Star Honor Band with four of those students being placed as the top student in their section. Students from all over Indiana are selected for this ensemble.
n Mutchler auditioned and was selected to advance to the semifinal round of the National Trumpet Competition. This is a national event where hundreds of high school and college students audition for trumpet experts for the prestigious award of National Trumpet Finalist. Semifinals are staged in March in Virginia.
