Consolidated
October was filled with outstanding learning opportunities for Sugar Creek Consolidated students. The fourth-graders journeyed to Fowler Park for Pioneer Days to learn about life in the 1840s. On Oct. 7, the students visited several cabins and gained knowledge about several job processes including hunting and trapping, log hewing, blacksmithing, and weaving and spinning. They also experienced what school was like in a one-room schoolhouse, played pioneer games, made cookies, and sang pioneer songs accompanied by a dulcimer. Our thanks are extended to the people who volunteered their time and shared their talents to make this trip so worthwhile. What a great learning experience!
The Pizza Hut Book-It program began in October and runs through March. The students are given a monthly reading goal by their teacher, and if they meet the monthly goal they are given a certificate for a free personal-size pan pizza from Pizza Hut. This is a great way to encourage reading among our students.
Sugar Creek Consolidated students are fortunate to be participants in the Kids Hope USA program. Our school is in partnership with the Sugar Creek Baptist Church. Eighteen boys and girls in first through fifth grade are currently benefiting from individual mentors. These adults generously provide academic support and friendship once a week during the school day.
Oct. 19-25 was Safe Schools Week. Various drills were practiced at school to ensure knowledge of necessary actions taken should a crisis occur. Some students also took part in a poster contest sponsored by the Indiana School Safety Specialist Academy. Twelve winning entries will be featured in the ISSA 2009-10 School Safety Calendar to be distributed to all public schools in August 2009. Halloween safety also was addressed by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department. Student safety is always a priority.
Our annual fall carnival was staged at school on Oct. 24. Games, a silent auction, yummy food, and other activities were enjoyed as we celebrated this colorful season.
Hats off to our wonderful Parent Club and all community volunteers who made this event possible!
Under the direction of Mrs. Tammi Turner and Mrs. Robbie Tribby, students in third through fifth grades have the opportunity to serve as Sugar Creek Consolidated Student Council members. Congratulations to the following students for being selected as representatives for this school year: Blaine Collins, Keyli McCarty, Katherine Holvey, Jase Whitesell, Isaac Auterson, Sean Beaver, Elizabeth Burton, Briana Gard, Kelsey Farris, Hailey Marvel, Rhyan Winkler, Bailey Parker, Helen Nesius, Madison Ward, Kylie Cardinal, Macey Baugh, Nate Keith and Kylyn Stewart. These children will represent their classes with a positive attitude and school spirit. They also will be responsible to communicate with the kindergarten through second-grade classes as we work on school projects together.
The experience of interactive learning and the inspiration and influence of community volunteers has a profound impact on our students. We are most grateful for these people and opportunities.

Davis Park
Once again the Davis Park newspaper, The Dolphin Pride, is off to a flying start. Fifth-grade students in Mrs. Henry’s class, with the assistance of their teacher and the media specialist, Ms. Ballman, work hard to ensure the newspaper goes out each month. The paper is filled with happenings from each classroom, special areas, awards, Character Education winners, parent information and current events. Students type in all of the information, proof it, compile and staple, and pass it out. It is a big job but they love it. It teaches them many skills such as editing, proofreading, keyboarding and other computer skills, along with responsibility, perseverance and pride in a job well done.

Deming
On Sept. 20, Deming Elementary participated in “Walk Now for Autism” in ISU Memorial Stadium. Miss Ashley Evans and Mrs. Deana Conner were co-captains of our Autism Walk team. Our team consisted of many students, parents, friends, family, faculty and staff of Deming Elementary. As a team, we raised more than $1,000 toward the fight against autism. We collected donations from many people throughout the community and staged a “Hat Day for Autism” at school.
Students and staff could wear a hat to school and bring 50 cents to help raise money for this great cause. We could not have raised this much money without the help of many people. We thank Mr. Chris Conner, a teacher at Terre Haute North Vigo High School, for designing our matching “Deming Stars” walk T-shirts. They were awesome. A huge thank-you to everyone who came out to participate in the walk on Saturday and to all of those people who bought T-shirts and made donations. Your support is greatly appreciated. Way to go, Deming Stars!
Deming Elementary also participated in Red Ribbon Week, a national event intended to spread anti-drug messages.
On Oct. 20, Mindy and the Fun Company performed for the entire school. Through songs, dance and discussion, the children were taught lessons on friendship, bullying, drugs and safety. We all had fun.
The assembly served as a kickoff for Red Ribbon Week, which was recognized Oct. 27-31. The following activities at Deming took place to recognize this national event:
Monday was Red Ribbon Day: All students and staff were given a red ribbon to show their commitment to being drug-free.
Tuesday was Don’t Sweat It-Be Drug Free: All staff and students wore sweatpants or a jogging suit to show that we are in control of ourselves by not using drugs.
Wednesday was Wear Red Day: All students and staff wore red in honor of Red Ribbon Week.
Thursday was Team Up Against Drugs: All students and staff wore their favorite team apparel to show the importance of working as a team.
We also had a poetry contest with the theme “I’ve Got Better Things To Do Than Drugs,” and there was an intermediate and a primary winner. Each winner received a T-shirt, tattoo and a treat. All participants also received a tattoo and a treat.

DeVaney
Our fourth-grade classes again were privileged to visit Fowler Park for the pioneer experience on Oct. 9. This is a tremendous field trip for the students. We would like to thank the many people in the community who are responsible for this happening. We would especially like to thank the Vigo County Parks Department and the Vigo County School Corp. for allowing the children this educational visit. We’re grateful to all the volunteers who gave their time and shared their knowledge. Our students were not only able to see how pioneers actually lived, but also had the opportunity to participate in a variety of everyday pioneer activities. There were several cabins (stations) that the students visited. Of these stations, they encountered the use of a two-manned saw, tasted beef jerky, used a chisel and hammer to help make a bowl out of basswood, learned about tanning an animal hide, as well as helped bake cookies in a reflector oven. This is a field trip that all of us look forward to every year.

Dixie Bee
The kindergarten students at Dixie Bee have been very buzzzzzy participating in a lot of fun and exciting fall events.
In September we talked about Johnny Appleseed and had an apple tasting party. We learned about the different kinds of apples and then graphed our favorite ones.
During Fire Prevention Week, the Honey Creek firefighters visited our school to discuss fire safety. We got to see the equipment they use and participated in a tour of the smoke house. We also were fortunate to have Sheriff’s Deputy Cottom visit our school. He gave us some very important safety tips to remember on Halloween and every day of the year.
One of Dixie Bee’s favorite events is the Fall Festival. Children, parents and teachers join together to play games, eat yummy food, and win prizes. This festival could not take place without our PTO and the help of everyone. Thanks to everyone for a fun night!
On Friday, the kindergarten students had a Halloween celebration at school. The children came to school dressed in their costume and paraded throughout the school to share their costumes with everyone. After the parade, the room volunteers provided a healthy snack, games, crafts and fun.
During November, we will travel to the Indiana Theatre to see a play. The play will include many wonderful children’s stories that we have read in our classroom.
Grandparents Day will be an exciting event for all. Many grandparents will travel to Dixie Bee to have a special breakfast with their grandchild. They will get to tour the school, meet the teachers, and have their picture taken with their grandchild.
In preparation for Thanksgiving, we will be working on comparing/contrasting Thanksgiving today and in the past and learning about the Pilgrims and Indians. We are thankful for so many things.
A special thanks goes out to Mrs. Janis Kluesner. Mrs. Kluesner has been coming to our school to show the kindergartners how to play the Everyday Math games on the computer. We have had a lot of fun and have learned so much.
Happy fall to everyone!

Fayette
During the month of October, the students at Fayette were reminded of many different safety rules. The volunteer firemen from several of the local fire departments visited the school to allow the students to view their equipment and review good fire safety rules.
Sheriff’s Deputy Cottom visited Fayette to work with students with safety concerns for Halloween activities. Deputy Cottom met with the children to talk about safety and to show a presentation that would help them remember safety rules for this season of the year.
The Fayette fourth grades in Mrs. Curley’s and Mrs. Kastigar’s classes attended two special training sessions about handling emergency situations sponsored by the local American Red Cross chapter. The training program is called “BAT,” Basic Aid Training. The program is a two-day event.
The different emergency situations included fire prevention and evacuation plans, rescue breathing, choking, basic first aid and poison control. The students were able to use mannequin heads and small dolls during the training sessions.
The fourth-graders learn how to clear the airway if a person is choking using small dolls. They learned another breathing aid skill by working with partners and mannequin heads. Each student was to plan a fire evacuation plan for their home and families. The instructors showed the students some basic aid skills they could use around their homes.
At the end of the course, each student received a Basic Aid Training Guide to keep, and they were encouraged to share their information and skills with their families at home.

The students and staff at Meadows Elementary can close the books on another exciting and busy month. October was kicked off with the participation of Read for the Record. Nearly 100 students simultaneously were read the Don Freeman book, “Corduroy,” by Meadows school staff and Dr. Burdin from Indiana State University. The Meadows Elementary Media Center conducted its fall book fair Oct. 6-9. We would like to thank Mrs. Shuck’s Fit for Life class at Terre Haute South Vigo High School and parent volunteers Debbie Montgomery and Amy Angilletta for their assistance.
Coinciding with the last day of the book fair was Grandparents/Special Friends day at Meadows. Guests visited various locations throughout the school making crafts, getting their picture taken, and shopping at the book fair.
Many of the Meadows Elementary students participated in field trips in October. On Oct. 2, first grade visited The Swanee Orchard and Oct. 17, the fifth grade ventured out to historic Billie Creek Village in Rockville. Meadows Elementary students and staff would like to thank their hosts for their hospitality. On Oct. 20, the kindergarten classes at Meadows Elementary were visited by Sparky the Fire Dog and members of the Terre Haute Fire Department. Our special guests taught the children fire safety and prevention tips and gave away activity books, helmets and badges.

Mrs. Sutterer’s and Miss Clark’s second-graders at St. Patrick School have been busy.
Each second-grade student and their family work on a Family Project each month. The project for the month of October was to make a map of the route they take from their home to get to school. This project tied in well with their social studies since they have been working with maps and learning various map skills.
Other family projects include creating a life box, writing their own newspaper and tracking the weather for a month and presenting the weather to their class in forecast form.
Recently the second-graders went on a field trip to Billie Creek Village for School Days. It was a great opportunity for the students to see buildings and demonstrations of things in the past. This is a favorite field trip for our second-graders.
The students in second grade receive two Sacraments throughout the year.
In December, they will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation so the students have been preparing for this and in the spring they will receive the Sacrament of Communion.
— Kathy Sutterer and Sarah Clark
Spanish report for St. Patricks:
We recently celebrated El DÌa de los Muertos. Students learned about the history of the holiday and how it is celebrated through stories, games and crafts. Some of the projects included skeleton puppets, skull masks, and the traditional Mexican art of papel picado.

West Vigo
The kindergarten classes at West Vigo Elementary recently visited the Terre Haute Children’s Museum. We were given a very special welcome by Mayor Duke Bennett. During our visit we participated in the “Hands are not for Hitting” Program sponsored by the Terre Haute Medical Alliance. We helped the workers at the Children’s Museum make a huge banner that will be displayed at City Hall, and watched a movie about being respectful and kind to our friends, which means there is no reason to ever be a bully. Kindergarten students at WVE are doing their best to be a friend to everyone by being thoughtful and using good manners. Before leaving the Children’s Museum, we were given time to explore all the awesome and fun-filled experiments in the museum. We thought our special hand-shaped sugar cookies were very yummy, too. Thank you to everyone who made this day enjoyable and educational!
— Kindergarten teachers
At West Vigo Elementary each October, the school counselor (Glenda Favre) and I (Karen Long, library media specialist) observe Red Ribbon Week with our students. Red Ribbon Week is basically an awareness campaign to alert our students to the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. We meet with each class to read a story that ties in to the subject and then follow that with a discussion. This year our book was “A. Lincoln and Me” by Louise Borden.
As part of our culminating activity for our Red Ribbon Week celebration, we anticipate a visit from President Abraham Lincoln on Nov. 14. Lincoln presenter Dean Dorrell from Washington, Ind., will speak with fourth- and fifth-graders until around 2 p.m. and then he will present a program to students in kindergarten through third grade from 2 to 2:30. We would like to invite you to attend the presentation.
