Woods prof to present at paralegal conference
Special to the Tribune-Star
TERRE HAUTE —
Kathryn L. Myers, associate professor and coordinator of paralegal studies at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, will attend the American Association for Paralegal Education Conference today through Saturday in Dallas.
Myers attends the conference every year, presenting in at least one session, and for the past eight years she has served as the conference chairwoman. As chairwoman, she works with a three-person committee to create about 50 sessions with more than 125 speakers/panelists.
This year, Myers will present five different conference sessions. The first session, “Engaging Students through Humor,” will provide attendees with ways to grab students’ attention while achieving academic learning, and the second session, “Fun with Legal Research and Writing,” is part of the writing workshop series that has been a hallmark of the conferences. The third session addresses service to the profession and taking advantage of volunteer opportunities; the fourth session is titled “Creating Synergy: Joining Paralegal Studies and Criminal Justice”; and the fifth session, “New Tools for Educators: Course Connect — Paralegal Series,” discusses electronic courses that can function as course enhancements or stand-alone courses.
Myers has been involved in paralegal education since 1982 when she helped create SMWC’s paralegal program. She served on the founding advisory board, taught as an adjunct instructor for two years, and then became the coordinator of paralegal studies in 1985. She has been active in the American Association for Paralegal Educators since 1989.
Faculty members in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department at SMWC are actively involved in research, practice and advocacy, bringing real-world applications of the social sciences to the classroom. The faculty members employ innovative teaching techniques, and they provide service and experiential learning opportunities to take learning beyond the classroom. Students have opportunities to participate in original research, present findings at regional and national conferences, and gain practical experiences in the social sciences through practicum and internship experiences.
