Essay contest for students in eighth grade

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana Business and Professional Women’s Foundation is sponsoring an essay contest for eighth-grade students in Indiana. The topic is How Would You Improve Communication if Technology did not Exist?

The program began Oct. 1 and ends Dec. 1.

Each participant is asked to submit an original composition, relating directly to the topic, in no fewer than 300 words nor more than 450. The essay should be typed (double spaced), or legibly handwritten, one side of paper only. It may be stapled, but no folders or paper clips. The writer’s name may not appear in the body of the essay, nor the city or school of the applicant. An entry form must accompany the essay with the appropriate signatures. (A Social Security number is needed for the state prizes of U.S. Savings Bonds.) Mail essay and completed form, postmarked by Dec. 1, to Essay Contest, Indiana BPW Foundation, P.O. Box 33, Knightstown, IN 46148.

Each participant will receive a Certificate of Participation upon receipt of the essay. One essay will be chosen from each of BPW/Indiana’s seven districts. Each of the seven winners and his/her parent(s)/ guardian(s) and teacher will be invited to attend, and give his/her essay at the District’s Spring Meeting, scheduled in this area for March 14. These same winners also will be invited to attend the luncheon on April 25 at the BPW/Indiana State Convention at the Holiday Inn of Terre Haute. These seven young people will be guests of the district at the Spring Meeting and guests of the Indiana BPW Foundation at the State Convention. The three state winners will be announced at the luncheon. These three will read their essays and receive plaques and Savings Bonds in the amounts of $200/First, $100/Second and $50/Third. Last year’s first-place winner in both District 5, and the state, was Brittany Wright from Clinton.
