High school news:

South homecoming brings school spirit

TERRE HAUTE According to answers.com, the definition of “homecoming” is a coming or returning home. That’s sort of what we do here at South.

Our school is like our home, although we won’t be here forever, our home is where our heart is and homecoming brings out that pride in where we’re from. Despite the fact that we are all different, we really come together during homecoming week to form the true personality of Terre Haute South. This year’s homecoming’s festivities took place from Sept. 22 through Sept. 26.

There were definitely some happenin’ hallways that week. Hallway decorating is a competition that has been carried on for years during homecoming week. It gives the school a different atmosphere to get everyone in the right homecoming mindset. The freshman decorated it up with a frightening theme. The stellar sophomores displayed bright stars, the juniors had a very yellow brick road Wizard of Oz theme, and the class of 2009 gave us a Haunted Hallway.

To kick off the week and get pumped for the big game, students decked out in spirit wear. For any newcomers who walked through the hallways that week, it may have been a little startling. The normal, laid back halls of South were jam-packed with kids in their favorite outfits to best represent the themed days.

Monday started us off with scrub and cameo day. Following that, it was “ugly” sweater day on Tuesday. Think sweater with the cats on it you wore when you were 10. On Wednesday, you would think that everyone had just rolled out of bed. Of course it was pajama day! On Thursday, hats were rocked, and traditionally, Friday was red, black and white day, to represent our school colors.

The week would not be complete without the queen and her court. It’s a very exciting and busy week for the ladies and their escorts. The court attendants included freshmen Molly Nasser and Lauren Kyrouac, sophomores Brittany Brown and Hannah Shepard, juniors Chelsea Ford, Brianna Gemmecke and Allison Vaeth. Senior attendants were Christine Duncan, Annette Muyumba, Kelsey Ray and Amy Telezyn. Our 2008 fall homecoming queen was Shayla Lewis.

On Wednesday, coronation took place for the court members. This was a special time to represent those elected. This formal event was magical and memorable for all involved. On Thursday the roles were reversed and the junior and senior girls got the chance to show off their football skills coached by our own South players. Once again the class of ’09 won. Following the game, the bonfire took place.

As the week was nearing an end there was still plenty more to look forward to. The pep session was a fun-filled event like usual. The court was represented in front of all their peers, there was a pizza eating contest and the Spirettes showcased an exciting dance.

The week ended with a parade down Seventh Street and the varsity football team fighting for a victory against Ben Davis. The theme of the game was “Where’s Waldo” so the bleachers were packed with fans sporting their white and red stripes.

Hip, hip, hooray for homecoming week! Although the week passed, the spirit and memories will last forever. When hearing mention of the word “homecoming,” a lot can come to mind. The neat thing about homecoming week and all that it entails at South is that everyone gets the chance to be involved. When thinking of homecoming, you can always remember the fun-filled week that Terre Haute South experienced. To all the past and present South students, Go Braves!
